So, I'm trying to spool my Stradic with braid using an arbor knot.  I'm tying it correctly but the knot keeps slipping.  I've never had this issue with mono or fluoro.  Is there a better knot to use?  Is this a main reason some people back fill with mono?  Thanks!

One of two reasons for me. 

The other is simply to save on braid...by spooling less.

With thin and slick braid line, sometimes I wrap the overhand knot through twice on the end of the line.

You need to use mono or fluoro for backing. The braid will just keep slipping on the spool. I use enough backing so I only need about 50 yards of braid.

It's not the braid slipping on the spool that's the issue.  It's that the arbor knot fails when tying with braid.  

Use a uni-knot and leave 1/2"+ tag end.  Tie the line onto the spool and cover the first wrap of line with cloth medical tape.

Braid is slippery and simply make 1 wrap of electrical tape over the knot.

Double the line over itself and Tie a Polomar knot. It will not fail like an arbor not which relies on basic over hand knots. I usually pop the spool off real quick as it’s less awkward.

 

 Hooked a striper on an ultralight once shad fishing, the polomar held.

I have never gotten an arbor knot to hold or tighten down with any kind of line.  No idea what my deal is but it’s the only knot, rope or fishing, that has ever totaly defeated me.  I now just tie a Trilene knot to the spool and use an inch or so of etape to hold it.  

As I've gotten older, my arbor knots have actually gotten worse.  To the point that just tie a Uni, and leave a short tag.  Done.

I normally use mono backing with braid for fresh water reels, but unless you have a smooth shinny spool base, the dog choker collar P method works. Just tie a loop, and feed the line through it and cinch down. I do this with salt water reels where you need every yard to not get spooled. A layer of masking or painters tape works too.

I'm doing a mix of this:

 but with a Palomar knot on both spinning and casting reel and works good with braid.

Thanks!  This is my method, going forward.

I did the choker for years on spin casters and spinning reels but when I started bait casting ( because you would need to pull the spool) I went to the cheesy arbor knot and have never had issues or slippage.  That said it’s no way I would trust an arbor knot if the reel got spooled but that’s not an issue for me in fresh water.

All that said I wouldn’t dare tie braid to a non-braid ready spool or for that matter any spool.

Some spools have a little piece of rubber built in for braid. I’ve only seen it on spinning reels.

I just tie a Uni knot with mono to the spool for backing. I don't get too hung up on the type of knot I'm tying to the spool, I figure if a fish ever gets me that far, my spool knot probably isn't going to matter.
