Starting club/ministry What Combo should I get?

Recommended Posts

Hey there, I've got this idea of starting a fishing ministry geared towards our churches middle and high schoolers. Looking to purchase 1 or 2 combo sets and need some advice. Funds will come out of my pocket so they are severely limited. I want to get something that will last but not cost an arm and a leg. What would you guys suggest? Do I go spinning combo's, spincast combo, or 1 of each, and what brand would you recommend?

Thanks

Gregg

All the kids in those age groups should be able to handle spinning reels.  I would go that way.  Berkley Lightning or Lightning Shock rods.  The Berkley Cherrywood series is a pretty good rod for the money at about half the price of a Lightning.  The Pflueger Trion is a good reel in its price range.  I have no idea how good the Shimano Sienna might be, but is is $10 cheaper.  Okuma makes two reels for $40.  I know nothing about them, but the few Okuma reels I have (baitcast) are very good values.

Based on ww2farmer's opinion of the Aird X baitcast rods, I'd be taking a look at the spinning models if you can come up with $55.  I don't normally recommend an Ugly Stik, but it might be a good choice for the younger kids.

Check FFO for rods and reels.  Some very good deals can be had there.  Especially when they run their buy one at regular price, get one 50% off sales...which happen more than once a year.  This is 50% off asking price, not list.  I got 2 Aetos casting rods ($199 list) for $75 + $37.50 plus tax and shipping).  You don't get free shipping with this deal.  Of course you may already be aware of how it works at FFO.  :teeth:

I see you are in central MD.  If you can wait a little, I suggest hitting up some of the fishing flea markets that happen around here over the winter.

This is not a complete list, but it seems to have most of the ones I have been to.  They are mostly salt-focused, but there are always a few of tables selling used gear for pretty decent prices.

Wow! Great stuff. I'm in no hurry to get this started so I may end up waiting. Thanks!

I second the idea of hitting the flea markets. We collect and sell tackle to raise funds for our charity. I can cherry pick some stuff for you if you want. Since you aren't too far from me, I'd also be willing to lend you some rods and reels if you ever need them. I would suggest spinning over spin cast or BC. And if you (or anyone else) wants to volunteer to a really worthy fishing related cause, check out Wish-A-Fish online. We are always looking for donations and volunteers.

Shimano sienna combo 40-50 bucks, decent little spinning set up.

You can also take a long at Ugly stik elite spinning, the rods are super durable and last forever. The rod itself is about 50, but you can get the combo for abouut 70ish-80.

And for spincast, I would just grab a Zebco at walmart, they usually have them for 20-50 dollars.

Also a Ugly stik GX2 combo at walmart, spinning set up, combo I've seen them for about 40 dollars a pop.

Thanks.  Will check it out to see if there is anything local.  Didn't know such a thing existed.

Thanks!  I will drive an hour or so for one with bass stuff.  I went to a cool little on up in northern MD last winter that was 90% smallmouth stuff, I gotta hunt around and try and find it again.

Not sure how great they are but one of my friends that never really fished before bought the lews American hero combo at dick’s for $30. He said he likes it, it’s a medium power and action. Should be fine for beginners to start fishing. I did read you want to replace the line that comes with them though.
