I've had some frustrating experiences with fluoro and am considering making the switch to copoly mostly for wacky rigging with my spinning rod on shallow waters.  I'd appreciate any advice/recommendations on which line provides the most reliability when paired up with a spinning rod, as well as brand recommendations. I also believe that you (should) get what your pay for and don't mind investing in a high quality line. Additionally, please share any insights related to the role of the reel that I should take into consideration too. My current set up is a ML/EF spinning rod with an old Shimano Sienna FD 4000.

I’d recommend forgetting copolymer and go with braid and whatever leader you want. I love using yellow braid and a fluorocarbon leaded for wacky rigs. The bright line helps detect those subtle bites. 

I have used fluorocarbon and is ok but had trouble casting for distance. never used poly so dont know about it. but tried bass pro braid in 10lb yellow and have not looked back. Love the way you can see it and distance is good. dont use a leader. Caught 5 2 1/2 lb bass the other day on this line.

Or, consider braid, maybe 15# to start.  I currently have braid (or Gliss) on all of my spinning reels. 

Somehow a good many people managed to catch a lot of fish on spinning reels loaded with mono long before fluorocarbon or braid became available.  Line twist with braid will be less...used properly.  Never used a Sienna, but the 4000 size should hold a lot of line and have a larger diameter arbor than the normal 2000/2500 bass size reels.  This will allow use of heavier lines.  I'd guess most people when using fluoro use 6-8 pound on their bass reels.  At least people on fishing forums.  I'd also guess most people on forums are going to be using it for finesse.  Smaller diameter fluoro causes less memory problems.  You should be able to use at least 10# fluoro on that reel.

 

I have braid on 3 spinning reels, but admit that I still prefer mono or co-polymer.

Also that seems like a very unbalanced setup you're running.  4000 reel on a medium light rod?

Thanks for sharing that observation.  The guy at BPS sold/set that up for me.  What ML/reel combination strikes the right balance?  I've been thinking about purchasing a new spinning reel and any suggestions would be appreciated.

back in the stone age (the 90s) i used to fish 12 pound mono on a 4000 size stradic and had zero issues with casting, memory or line twist.

 

nowadays, people are reluctant to put anything over 8 pound mono on any size reel it seems. 

 

having said that, I do like the 3000 size shimano spinning reels, they are perfect for 8 or 10 pound mono, which is what I would use (i use 8 or 10 pound Sufix Siege). I understand that flouro can be stiff and i believe copolymers can be as well. A standard monofilament might be better in this case. Good luck with whichever you choose and have fun.

For a little more than what a Sienna costs - I'd go with a Mitchell Avocet RZT. I have the RZ and it's a good reel for ML type rigs...Drop-shot, Ned, Weightless Wacky, etc. The RZT improves on the RZ by doubling the number of bearings.

 

Another possible...and another one I have...is a Pflueger Trion.

 

For those type of applications, don't need more than a 2000 size...30 for the Pflueger.

 

I'm actually considering upgrading my RZ to a RZT this coming winter.

I been using KK copolymer and really like it Just my opinion.
