Anyone Superstitious?

In my original post I said I wasn't superstitious, but I just realized there is something I do, or in this case don't do.  I won't talk about getting s'kunk'ed.  I'm afraid if I say it out loud then it will happen.

The first cast catch curse is real. I don't care what anyone says. I never have a good outing when that happens. Had it happen 5 times this season alone. Sometimes I'll make a cast into land just to p

Nah... I used to be something fierce though! It's kind of amazing how insanely superstitious I used to be and now I'm 99.99% percent not. 100% not when it comes to fishing. The one thing after all these years though, is hats on a bed. I know, I know... I actually have to throw one on there every once in while just to remind myself how ridiculous being superstitious is for me personally though. I do respect other peoples though, and get a kick out of some of the classics : IE bananas, first cast, lucky hat, lure, etc. To each their own if someone is though.

Never catch a fish on the first cast. If I get bit on the first cast, I won’t set the hook.

I wonder how many PBs you missed.

Well, thinking like that sure should cure that superstition! Haha.

Snagging a lure after catching a fish on it will result in a terrible day of fishing.

Happened twice this season. Lost two good cranks after pulling in a decent bass and the bite shutdown right after on both trips.

The Calcutta, the Crucial or the Red Shad Ribbon Tail? All of the above? Haha

I am not superstitious in the conventional sense, however, I always make a tobacco offerings and silently say a prayer of thanks and that any fish caught can be released without injury....

I've heard many theories on this, but the one that seems the most plausible, is about shipping in the 1800's.  Ships would bring bananas from the tropics to America. Often those bananas had poisonous spiders hidden in the bunches which, in turn, would kill several of the deckhands before they could reach port.

Soon it became "legend" that bananas on boats were "bad luck".

I'm not sure how accurate that is - or true - but it seems plausible.

To the best of my knowledge that's where it came from. Spiders in the bananas caused alot of deckhands and harvesters to die.

Not really superstitious but I wont make a good cast on the first cast of the day.  I usually flip my bait out into the middle of the lake and reel it in superfast to make sure I dont  catch a fish onto he first cast.  My net stays put up until the first fish is on.  I will only fill my livewells when I catch the first fish to go in. If I have a big fish I dont weigh it before weigh in.  When I cull I always throw the fish off the opposite side of the boat I am fishing. I wont quit using a worm after it has caught a fish until it is totally unusable. If I have a really good day on the water my rods stay on deck until the next time I go fishing.  I don't want to put the rods up if the have just been used to hammer them.  If I have a bad day.  Anything I fish with gets cut off and re tied.  I have a special color I have more confidence in because I won a couple tournaments on it on tough days when I know that the color wasn't the deciding factor but I still feel it is kind of lucky.  I dont think I am that superstitious though.

I don't necessarily do all I can to prevent it, but daggumit - catching a fish on the 1st cast seems to ruin the rest of the day......almost like the fish are superstitious.....it's happened to me before, but I don't place a lot of belief in it, but it IS weird.

Many, many times My dad and I would catch one each early and comment that it was a good sign, only to have the fish get lockjaw right after. get lockjaw. My dad would always say we just hit the tail end of a feeding time. I don't believe that now. No matter what the solunar table says, morning is the best time when the water's warm, followed by late evening. Then there are occasional bursts of activity during the day.

I used to think it was a jinx to remember the net and/or the scale.

No superstitions for me. I'm OCD about keeping the boat clean and organized.  Nothing takes my head out of it like the boat being all cluttered up

The funny thing is I am not a superstitious person but we bought a new boat and they called and said I could either pick it up Friday or Saturday so I was stoked then my wife said we cant get it Friday, its the 13th!

I was like and???? but a few other people said they agreed!

So I got it the 14th instead!

Off topic, but have to share - My sister once got a bunch of green grapes from Wal Mart.  Once arriving at home, she put the whole bag in the sink to rinse them off.  Out comes a black widow spider.  Mind you, we live in Iowa, where there are definitely no black widows.

She called the Wal Mart to complain, and they gave her a $150 gift card.

I've only heard of the Banana Curse thing. Never heard of the others like the First Cast thing so they obviously can't affect me ;)

I never go fishing the first time during a new season. I only go the second time. Going the first time is a jinx thing waiting to happen.

Yes, I am superstitious, and proud of it.

It started with my Cajun grandmother who helped raise me in south Louisiana and continued through middle and high school and then through college.

Carried superstitions with me in the Army and Vietnam and still have them to this day.

Not going into my bass fishing superstitions, alebet one,  but I do things a certain way everytime I go fishing. The one I will share is that I never, never, never want to catch anything on my first cast. So I throw out my buzzbait and reel it back fast to prevent any bass from hitting it.

I believe that should you catch a bass on your first cast of the day you will have a lousy day fishing.

True?  Give it a try and let us know. :stupid:

I’m not superstitious. Though, I’ve been catching less fish since I broke my lucky knife removing an old kitchen backsplash. That said, I only use Aveeno sunblock, because it does not affect fishing. And when I’m fishing alone on a concrete platform pier, with the water up to my ankles and there's a shark bigger than me 3 feet away checking me out, I go home and don’t look back.

Lol! I intentionally and habitually make a random cast in a very unlikely area as soon as I get on the water to dismiss the first cast superstition. This was passed on to me by my father when I was a child.
