Removing split rings when using snaps?

Featured Replies

I recently picked up some mustad fastach snaps to try out, mostly when using treble hook baits like cranks, poppers, jerkbaits, etc because I find myself retying often as I can never decide what exactly I want to throw. I've heard you never attach the snap to your split ring and instead attach it directly to the lure. My question is, is it necessary to remove the split rings when using a snap, even if you aren't attached to them i.e., just leaving it hanging there while you're fishing? Does it change the action of the bait to a reasonable amount? I might want to keep the split rings on in case I ever use those baits on another rod or decide not to use the snap.

Thanks in advance!

For the baits I use a fastach with, I remove the split rings and save them.

I don't use snaps but if I did, I would take off the split rings.

I have found myself a time or two temporarily unable to remove a split ring. I have just left it on and used the snap with no issues. Just snap to the line tie, not the ring.

Is it going to hurt anything, no probably not.

Should you remove it, yes if it’s possible.

Poppers and jerk baits shouldn't have a split rig to start with.

Remove the split rings if not being tied to.

I use those clips with great success. I always leave the rings on and place the clip above it. Never had an issue.

I always use snaps and never remove the split ring.  I’ll even add a split ring on top waters that doesn’t come with it.

Out of the box off comes the split ring (I only fish for fun) and I use the fly fishing snaps from Orvis.  They are tiny, strong, feather weight and provide unrestricted lure action.  The snaps stay tied on to my crank bait set ups so I can just change crank baits.  I do retie to the snaps if they have had a workout.

I have always used snaps and I have always connected them to the split rings.  I don't see why this is important.

Same here. Zero issues connecting my snap to the split ring.

I attach buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, Chatterbaits and crankbaits with a snap to the split ring and have never had any problems.

I do use yellow riding tractor fuel hose cut into small pieces on the buzzbaits and spinnerbaits to hold the snap in place.

The downside to attaching a snap to the split ring on cranks baits is, it gives the bait a wider wobble. Sometimes that is a good thing, other times it will get you hung up easier.

If you decide to attach a snap to the eye and not remove the split ring, attach it above the split ring so as not to change the angle of the line and loose depth.
