Looking for a new rod - uses for a 7' medium-heavy/moderate-fast?

Featured Replies

I've been sorta in the market for another "all purpose rod," that is, a rod that can be used for a somewhat large variety of lures with success (ideally spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, paddletail swimbaits/swimjigs, some topwater like buzzbaits, maybe lipless cranks and bottom baits in a pinch). Currently I'm looking at the Okuma Scott Martin Signature TCS casting rod, the 7' medium-heavy/moderate-fast model. Do you guys think this might match my needs? I'm looking at this rod specifically because it's on sale on tacklewarehouse ($130), but I'm open to any other ideas in a similar price range. Thanks in advance!

It might, I’m probably in the minority but I like to throw spinnerbaits on my fury 705cb($120). I’ve used it for small swimbaits also it did fine.

I think this rod was designed to be a general purpose rod. I would check on the price though.  I have seen these for around $100 on Amazon.

Do I think that rod will match your needs? Yup! I use 7’ ish fast rods for a lot of things, works for me.

Wow.  Found a 7' M-MF for $88.80.  I've read these rods a very good for the money.  I need another rod like a hole in the head, but this is kind of hard to pass up.

I couldn't find a good deal on the 7' MH-MF.  I like its lure range....provided it is accurate....better than the M-MF rod.  I only have one M-MF rod and that is a 7'2" HMG.  The TCS should be a better rod.  Looking like I need another M-MF rod.

Thanks a lot for the post...........not.

Love that rod!  I also throw spinnerbaits as well as chatter baits, swimjigs (light wire), spooks ploppers, cranks and jerks with it, underrated rod imo, very versatile.

Yup, it’s great for what I wanted it for and a few other things. Can’t go wrong for the price.

Throw a dc reel on it and it gets even more fun.

I have that exact rod !

Bought it for chatter/spinnerbaits but end up using it for plopper topwater clones (Choppo)

I will suggest a falcon bucoo sr 7ft mh mod fast.. its a sweet little rod and can be used for tons of applications..

A medium heavy moderate fast rod can do just about anything.  Never used an Okuma rod but academically you are in the strike zone.

Own the Bucoo SR medium heavy and yeah, an excellent, excellent rod for the $.  Close to a medium power though.

I personally started buying Lew's rods n reels and the 7ft 3 custom lite medium heavy moderate fast casting rod couldn't have been a better choice for its versatility as you mentioned you were looking for. The first time out i threw a neko rig with a 3/32 nail weight in the head of an 8 inch Yamamoto senko and had amazing success hooking and landing 3 plus pound largemouth. The softer tip kept me from breaking off on a powerful hookset and the extra length gave me complete and total control while fighting these fish to the boat. Meanwhile my next time out still only using this one rod I was able to land fish very effectively throwing 1/2oz spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, football jigs and Texas rigs. The only people to claim technique specific rods are the manufacturer to get the public to purchase more and more rods more than one needs. You really only need 4 or 5 good casting rods that cover the small spectrum of powers and actions. Throw in a med lite exfst spinning for for finesse techniques and thats all you really need. Rick Clunn mentioned while commentating an elite series tournament that when he was dialed in he never had more than 5 rods on his front deck and that man is a freaking legend. Possessing countless rods is what big name advertisers want so youll bring more money into their pockets. Give that some thought.

I saw @Derek1 post about the Fury FR705CB for $120 and was thinking, where are they selling for $120? LOL.

When I do a google search for a specific topic, the results for this forum will be grouped up and sometimes the threads are from 5, 10, 15, or even 20 years ago.

It was probably an older post. The fury series were $120 when I bought mine. Not sure what they are now.

In that price range I have a few of the St. Croix BassX rods that I really like. I know - some people aren't fans, but they have never let me down.

My St. Croix Mojo Bass Glass MH-Moderate is my most used.  Love it for choppos, walking top waters, crank baits and chatter baits.
