Best walking bait? Rover vs. Vixen?

Featured Replies

Fishing lake Guntersville - Jamie Hartman (Bassmaster pro) recently slayed em on a bone Vixen. Just wondering how the Rover or other walking baits compare to the Vixen. Which would you all choose for G'ville? Thanks.

Get some of both ?! Seriously,  they sound different so having 1 of each wouldn't be a bad idea.

I have both and tend to reach for the Vixen more often. It's a confidence thing

They quit making the Vixen for a while, and I started fishing a Sammy's and Rovers.  Got to say I'm waiting for a sale (probably Veterans Day), and I'm getting a few Vixens.  I am down to one Rover and am probably not going to buy more, but I do like the 3 hook Sammy.  Never fished Guntersville though, but an off-white is usually a good color in a lot of places I fish.

I love that bone color....

I just tried the stutter step over the weekend. It looks unconventional but it basically walks itself. May be more of a beginner bait, but wanted to mention it.

I wasn't a fan of the Rover. Just bite the bullet and get a Repoman ? I hate how good those things work.

boing, spook, sammy, vixen, etc. all good baits and most times equally effective - each has a bit different move that may make a difference at times but the guy manipulating the lure is the most important element here.

Would appreciate any input on preferred rod and line set-up for the vixen.  Been a long time since I've thrown walking baits and I want to give the Vixen a try but no clue on best rod, flouro vs mono, line weight, etc...

Flouro sinks and will disrupt the baits action. You want mono or braid. 30 Lb braid or 12 Lb mono.

Killer walking bait

I have to fish mine with wire - apparently old Mr Toothy likes them too.

Never had any luck on the Vixen or Rewpoman for some reason. My favorite new walking bait is the wooden Sammy as it is more subtle in the water.
