What’s that white stuff behind the gas station? ?

We're just going to ignore that.

I have OQ testing for work I have to get done tonight. 6poundbass on the other hand....

  • The last 2 years here in the Minneapolis area have been ice out the first week of May... yes May not a typo... So I will predict our ice-off date at May 3, 2020.  Which is 172 days.  Argh..

  • We got 3 inches of snow Monday night, but I'm headed out Saturday we're supposed to be in the mid 50's.   Saw some guys getting gas this morning and they are pre-fishing for a 100+ boat tour

Yesterday was in the low 50's up here and there was big sun.

Over night the rain started and is forecast to go on a while.

Still 18 days away from my projected Open Water date,

but considering the rate we're loosing the snow on the ground, that's not looking too bad.

Could even beat it -

Now wouldn't that be a beautiful thing . . . .

The smaller lakes around here are still ice covered, although not for much longer. It doesn’t matter though, because I just got back from a drive to check out Georgian Bay and it’s clear sailing as of today ?
Still have a bit of stuff to load up in the boat, but as long as the weather isn’t too terrible next weekend, we’ll be chasing some trout.

That is great news !

We are still working on several days of on & off rain.  Ground snow is making a mass exidus.  I will be making my first visual check on local Lake Menderchuck before my workout tomorrow morning.

Fully expect it to be iced up but it will be nice to check it out anyway.

Good Luck on your first trip out.

where is this in GBay? Near the Sound or closer to Collingwood/Wasaga?

We got some good rain down here in Barrie - and my brother in law and I were checking out some belly boat / wader spots close to home that are opening up nicely.

Didn't take pics, but the two places I shore fish are open. Black Lake and Emerald Lake are ice-free. I saw that Seaton was also ice-free, but there's really no shore-spots there.

Spring Park Bay was 30% open and the rest looked like 'mush'...so we may have an earlier than average ice-out this year.

Might go cast a line from shore sometime the next few days.

Took my first ride of the spring over to Lake Menderchuck yesterday afternoon.

As expected snow is almost gone around the lake but the lake is still iced over.

I will be using the expected nice weather coming to put up the snow blower and break out the lawn gear.

This will essentially guarantee a big April snow storm very soon.

Either way, should still be at least a week or more before open water, but I will be ready when the time comes.

Let's play "Find the Cold Front"

Crazy contrast in temperatures at play over a short distance.

The good news?

The system will pull north and not impact Michigan dramatically.

This morning's visual check on local Lake Menderchuck indicated the ice is getting thin and may not be there much longer.

Raining today and the day / night seasonal air temps are making my 15 April 2020 projected open water date

look more & more likely.

Anytime I see 'brownie', I think 'Brown Trout'...just a left over from my days of stream fishing for brookies, brownies and rainbows.

It is supposed to be 70 degrees here on Tuesday. Hard to imagine we’ve had April blizzards here the past 2 years with the current forecast.

Oh now you've gone and jinxed us - we're doomed.

Got the boat out sat. for the first time this year. Had my best opening day that I can remember. 16.75"lm, 16.5" & 16.25" sm. 2 bigger ones on a chatterbait. Went to another lk. on sun, 6 lm 7pike, (all legals) . Water temps from 44 to 50 degrees. All fish on sun. on custom bladed jig with that dang red skirt. It was awesome...

I’m guessing you’re in the Detroit area? Those are some warm temps. I was out yesterday for our first trip, and in the morning the temps were 41 and 44 when we loaded at 1 pm. The lake I fish is a small and deep 85-90’ , so that probably plays a factor.

Yeah- small and deep equals cold water for awhile. Sunday's lake (1000 acres) maybe 20' max for a small section, most of the lake is less than 8'.

Just got back ~

Big Rains last night did the trick.

OPEN WATER ! ! !

A week ahead of my 15 April Predictor - Big Fan of that !

I'll be tying on a few baits and heading back to Lake Menderchuck

A sling shot launch (no docks yet) and I'll be wetting my first line of the 2020 Campaign.

Very Exciting -
