50 degree water

Featured Replies

Bass fishing north west louisiana water temp between 55/60 degrees. What are the top 3 lures to throw. We have been catching tons of small fish but cannot get a big bite.

I normally just always throw a big jig to entice a big bite but at those temps, it really shines for me.  Now, it could be different as I'm doing 99% of my fishing in northern NY.  I went out the day before Thanksgiving.  Water temp was 40.  My father and I stuck a 22lb bag with a 1/2 oz jig/big salty chunk combo. If I had to choose 2 other baits they'd be a bladed jig and lipless crank.

If the water's clear, a suspending jerkbait can be a good producer. Another would be a swimbait, slowly reeled over the top of any vegetation. The third one I'd go with would be a blade bait jigged off some hard bottom structure.  The downside is, in the wrong place, you may end up catching only small fish. When you're after big fish, it's difficult to leave a spot, but that's exactly what you need to do for cold or warm water. If water temp drops into the 40s, switch the jerkbait out for a jig.

I dont ever choose a bait based strictly on the water temp but without any other info.

Carolina Rigged Fluke, Dropshot, Jig-n-Craw, & Spoon.

If you're fishing Caddo Lake, Bisteneau, or Cross Lake, I'd start with a 1/2 jig, 5/8 oz. spinnerbait (slow rolled), and a Texas rig with a creature bait.

Also, if you get a calm sunny day fish a Rogue or Redfin up shallow during the last hour of the day before sunset. I have done extremely well with this technique during this time of year.
