Kids spinning combo and braid

Featured Replies

My kids got one of the little $10 2’ spinner combos from academy and have been having a blast catching little bluegills. One of them got tangled pretty good and we lost a bunch of the line on the reel. I’ve got 40 or 50 yards of 15 pound braid sitting on a spool in the garage. Any issues using the braid on one of these little reels?

See below for a picture of the combo. 340F6AA9-9621-45A5-81A0-AA19AF09A761.jpeg.0bd93e1a0553652d1c6716c2319f4e09.jpeg

Braid may cut grooves into soft metal guides and reel bail so it depends on how hard those components are.

Id try it. If it starts grooving, you get to buy him a new rod :). Just dont forget to adjust the drag to compensate.

I put 10lb braid on my son's ugly stick youth combo. He doesn't fish a ton, but it's held up for a few years now. Should be fine.

I doubt those little bluegills are going to put enough pressure on the line to grove the guides.

It does take pressure the braid line being cast and retreived can damaged both guides and bail if the metal isn't heat treated. braid also cuts fingers.

Why not simply buy $5 spool of 8 lb mono and elininate the issues?

That Zebco Omniflex line at Walmart is dirt cheap and more than enough for catching Bluegill.
