Catching Bass from the Back Seat

Featured Replies

Here's a topic that doesn't get discussed very often, but should.  There's a lot of misconceptions out there, preventing people from being as successful as they can.  So here are 5 simple tips for catching more bass from the back seat.

Awesome video.  Very well done!  And how about that Hawg! GO KERI

Excellent. Thanks Glenn

Outstanding vedio, thank you sharing both you and Keri's background and fishing skills.

To be successful as a backseater it requires more fishing skills IMO. The downside is you can't can't control the pace you fish and it takes a lot of practice and skill to slow down in a faster moving boat.

I watched Carol Martens out fish her son Aaron from the back seat several times, sounds Keri has similar skills.

Funny you mention that. Re-watch the beginning of the video (Keri's catch). That's Carol's voice in the background.  We were fishing with her that day.  :)

Exactly! Fishing in the back of the boat made me a more adaptable fisherman.  I love how Glenn's first point was to be observant.

Do all you folks have "bass" boats?...a boat with a casting deck and a bow mounted trolling motor?  I feel like I'm from a different planet. LOL

Good point you do need a bass boat with a back seat and a partner up front operating the trolling motor to apply the vedio to your fishing.

I know a lot of guys with boats that have transom mounted motors. They run them backwards for better control.

I started with a 13' Boston Whaler, and then had a 19' Ranger bass boat many years ago, but I have also spent LOTS of time fishing as a backseater. I'll fish from the bank too if that's what's on the menu.

I also caught my PB from the backseat.

I'm generally fine fishing from the back seat. Doesn't really bother me in the least. . . . UNLESS the fish are somewhat deeper (and on a steep bank) and the person up front has the trolling motor on high speeding down the bank. I cast as far ahead as I dare, and by the time my bait hits the bottom, it's already past the back of the boat. Dragging behind the boat is far too deep.

If it's someone I know, I may crawl up on the front deck with them. But if it's someone I'm not too familiar with, and I haven't found a good way to successfully address the situation, I probably wouldn't fish with them again.

I tend to fish areas pretty deliberately and if I am up front, and as long as someone isn't a complete spode, I have no problem with them fishing side by side with me. If my bait is halfway back to the boat and they cast up ahead of me, I don't mind playing leapfrog.

Very informative video, thanks.

What I find hilarious, a very close friend of mine who has a rear mounted trolling motor always asks if I'll operate the boat. Claims I'm better at the controls. Lol

I'll store this video in my noggin.

I have a rear mounted tiller control trolling motor. It takes one of my hands to steer which means I ruin lots of casts fighting wind and current.

Nobody ever wants to take a turn driving the boat.  I have so many stories of days where I wore myself out doing nothing but fighting the wind all day. I love days with little of NO wind.

When I was fishing more often with local pro's they often ask me to operate their boats.

I always thought it was like a holiday for them to relax and just fish without the hastle of constantly controlling the boat and deciding where to fish. I also knew they hoped I would put them on a new spot....

I try to keep it simple with tackle choice and limit myself to 3 rods...senko, top water and a skirted jig.

Whatever the "pro" is throwing, I try something as complete opposite as I can. As an example below, the Pro was throwing Rattle Traps.

Before the LaCrosse WI pool was all the rage back in the late 90's. I took 12 on a buzz bait, over the wing dams in the main channel and all were over 3lbs. That was out of the back of the boat, during a Red Mann tournament. When they asked the Pro what the winning recipe was, he said 'Buzzbaits, over wing dams in the main channel' and the crowd roared in laughter.
