This just in...  BRP will discontinue production of all Evinrude/Etec motors.

Yep, it's over.  Had zero issues out of my current G2 and previous 2009 250HO, but looks like my next motor when I upgrade boats in 2028 will be a Merc...

Surprised it took so long.

In my area, they will not be missed.....But surprised as they just got into a new marina

 

 

It was only a matter of time, because Evinrude painted themselves into a corner.

It's not possible for '2-stroke' motors (save their 4-cycle kickers) to compete in a market

dominated by 4-stroke engines. I have owned an E-tec, and I liked it a lot.

Surprised they lasted long as they did. The 4 stroke is so much better motor, wish I had one.

Hate to see anyone go out of business these days, but not being competitive with 4-strokes put the writing on the wall.

I'm not exactly surprised in any of this. They were late to the party on any new technology and staying with the 2 stroke instead of moving to 4 wasn't the greatest decision either. Add on top of that the hideous look of the G2 and no wonder there wasn't enough business coming in to keep things going.

You may be right on that... Although Evinrude remained 2 stroke technology and has polarizing looks, they have shown courage to be innovative and take risks (E-tec, G2 cosmetics, etc) so wouldn't be surprised to see them push the envelope with electric motors or something else.  

I wondered in the beginning why an airplane giant would want in the outboard motor business.  I spent 2 days in meeting in Kansas City with them after they took over from OMC.  They never mentioned any strategies for regaining the share of the market that had been lost.  

Evinrude did not “bite the dust”. 
read the press release. They are no longer manufacturing Outboard motors. We can debate the reasoning on that decision for ever. Marketing has always been Evinrude’s downfall. 
The Evinrude name sake will live on. BRP, which is a big innovator in the outdoor sports arena, has decided to build boats with on-board motors. These motors are called Ghost and will have the Evinrude name. The Sturtevant facilities are being re-tooled to make these new engines. These new concept motors allow complete use of all deck space.

BRP also released a statement that warranties will be honored, parts will still be made, and dealers will still be supported for G1andG2 motors.
