New Dropshot/Wacky Rig Setup - $250 Budget

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I do a lot of Dropshot fishing, but would like to start adding Wacky Rig into the mix. My current rig is a "budget" setup and I'd like to upgrade a bit.

A few questions:

1. Do I need two different rods for Dropshot and Wacky Rig or can I fish them on the same rig effectively?

2. Would you recommend Medium Light or Medium Power? Fast or Extra Fast Action?

3. What length?

4. Rod recommendations? St Croix Mojo Bass, iROD Genesis II, etc...

5. Reel recommendations? Leaves me with about $100 to spend on a reel - Abu Garcia Revo X, Pfleuger President XT, Shimano NASCI, etc...

6. Reel gear ratio?

Thanks!

I fish a drop shot and wacky on the same rod with no problems. I use a daiwa Tatula 7’ medium rod and a tatula CHX 3000 spinning reel with 10lb braid to leader

What Short Fish says is a great setup. For $250 your should be able to get a good rod and reel with maybe some extra for a roll of braid.

daiwa tatula elite dropshot/finesse 7’ ML with a pflueger supreme or president xt

Dobyns Sierra 702SF with a Pflueger Supreme

Ark Tharp Series Meterman or Phenix Feather 71 M with a Shimano NASCI. If Daiwa, a Daiwa Fuego LT or Exceler LT

I have a both the Pflueger Supreme XT and the Daiwa Regal LT and I prefer the Regal which is about $100 cheaper.

SC Mojo Bass "Wacky Style" 68MXF with a Shimano Sahara should be <$ 200.00.

Daiwa Tatula Bass 6'8" MF

Daiwa Regal LT 2500 D-XH.  I've been seriously impressed by these reels and it seems everyone else is as well.

7’ Tatula XT MF with Daiwa Fuego LT 3000.  8 lb Sufix Siege.

I am planning an upgrade to Daiwa Tatula 7’ MF and Tatula LT 3000.

Whats wrong with the budget setup?

I would upgrade the rod first.

If you aren't losing fish with the current reel's drag, there really isn't much to be gained there. But if after upgrading the rod you decide you want a lighter reel or a bigger spool then you can take it in that direction.

Add me to the list. I recently picked up a Regal LT to pair with a ML Daiwa Aird, as I wanted to add a ML combo to my lineup but not spend a lot. I was extremely impressed by the Regal.

Sahara was my other most recent spinning reel acquisition. Paired with a Dobyns Fury. I was likewise extremely impressed by it.

For wacky rig and dropshot applications, I would put most of your budget toward the rod since sensitivity is going to be key for that use. Either the Regal or the Sahara should be a perfectly good reel to supplement a top-notch rod.

Thanks guys!

If you’re fishing around any sort of grass I would go medium power over the medium light

Dobyns fury 702 or 703 with a shimano nasci. I have this setup and I don’t know if you can beat it for the money.
