How can i transfer my fishing line?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, just got into bait casting reels and i love it, i have been using it with 100% braid. Now i want to have backing and mono filament.
What is the best way to transfer my current braid that is on my reel without throwing it in the garbage haha, so i can re-use it later, is that even possible?

Thank you

You can reel it onto a different reel, wind it onto an old spool, wind it onto a dowel with a drill.

amazing, thanks for the tip!

In your experience, would you rather have full braid, or flurocarbon with braid backing?

Depends what I'm doing. I like fluorocarbon for bottom contact baits, braid for most spinning rod applications and anything in vegetation with casting gear as well as treble hooked topwaters and C-rig mainline. I use mono and copolymer quite a bit as well.

You can wind it on anything, even a paper towel or tp core.  I’ve used a piece of cardboard.  You can get a longer life on it by reversing ends after a year or two of service.

Wind it around the diameter of a coffee can.

I highly recommend a second spool so it can be with you as conditions change or the bait you want to fish goes best with.  Depending on your situation a long leader may be just as good.  I run 20-25 foot leaders on my spinning rods so I can retie often and change rigs if I want with no reties during the trip.

My only concern would be the Knot making my reel struggle, or not sure if it can effect my casting distance since the knot would have to go through the guides, thoughts about this?

There are lots of knots that you can use that will go easily through the rod eyes.

Mind giving me some names please? Last time i tried tying new line to my old spool, the knot was visible  on my reel and it was making my line not cast to it's fully capabilities. Not sure what i did wrong :S

I’ve used this knot, but I don’t let the knot reach my reel. 5-6 foot leader.

Oops, link not working. It’s the Crazy Alberto and found on Salt Strong site.

What rod and reel do you have, micro guides??

I use the Alberto Knot to join two lines together and it held together for my personal best that I recently posted a 6 lb 15 oz with an 8 lb leader

This is an easy way to do it. Just make sure it's taking longer from the top and over.
