Advice on using crankbait

Featured Replies

So I have a crank bait(has 2 treble hooks front and back and has 2-3 small balls in it) and I can't figure out how to use it. Do reel it in slowly, reel it in like fast or tease the fish by tugging it twice or three times and this thing goes to the bottom of reel too fast

First thing we need to know is, is this a "lipless" crankbait or a billed bait?

Do you know the exact brand and name of the bait?

It has a billed part on the front yes

Also looks like a bee with white and black dots with a transparent pink bottom

Well James , there is alot of info on crankbait fishing here on BR and many other websights, utube vids, etc.that can help you. You have a squarebill shallow (4') diver that floats at rest. Usually fished fast, but moderate speed with a few jerks mixed in works for me.

If you are fishing from bank , it will probably have limited applications . I never use floating cranks from bank . Parallel casting banks , especially rocky banks would be a place to try it . They are not designed as a top water bait , they work best when allowed to dive next to fish hiding areas .

As has been said Rocks and wood, really any feature that you can bounce them off of is the ticket. I rarely get bit on a straight retrieve with crankbait.

Pretty tough to fish a crankbait wrong. Cast, retrieve and try to keep at the depth you require and fish it with a steady retrieve or a cadence you desire.

As simple as Crankbait fishing is there is a wide range of design to them. Pick a few variety’s and try them. A lot of specifics to them you will learn along the way. That will come in time.

Crankbaits are very, very productive. Draw reaction strikes. Good search bait. Color I guess is a confidence or preference thing. I prefer natural colors not real image patterns and bright colors of chartreuse, orange or yellows in them. Conditions sometimes dictate what I use. Have fun.
