What has your experience been like with guide replacement?  Do they normally replace the guides or exchange rod?  Got a Imx Pro 845c crank rod, the 3rd double foot guide started to groove and fray my line.  Lost couple fishes and lure because of it already.

You have an issue I have never heard of regarding modern guides. I will be very interested in what

G.Loomis has to say. Sounds to me like the insert is broken or has fallen out. 

The insert is still intact with the frame

 

I never heard of the alconite groove either, which are on the IMX Pro.  I've heard of the recoil or cheaper guides groove but never the Sic or alconites.  Its also weird how its on the double footed guides as opposed to the more common rod tip guide.  

 

Good thing my season is over,  nonetheless I'll hear from Loomis tomorrow

I'll try to get a picture for future reference if anyone is on a search for a groove alconite guide.  Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about the Imx guides tho

The color of the ring looks more like a Fazlite. All the alconites I've worked with were pitch black.

And actually, from that angle, it doesn't look like a grooved guide, it looks like excess epoxy on the ring that the line cut into.

Just curious.   What kind of line is being used?

10 to 12lbs sniper

Sniper shouldn't cause the guides to wear like that unless you are really putting some high stress on the rod.

 

Have you tried running a cotton swab through the guides?  If it teares the cotton, then something funky may be going on.  

 

I would also clean the guides with alcohol, same swab.  You can also run a cotton swab lightly wet with reel oil to smooth them out.  

 

Otherwise hopefully Loomis can work with you on it.

I'm sticking with my theory if wayward epoxy from coating the wraps.

Thats how i found the groove with the q tip trick.

I would hate to see you send it back for a simple fix like that.

Grooving will not cause line failure.  It is smooth.  A crack in the ring will.  Does it pass the Q-tip test?

 

Also, this may not even be your problem.  Does the tiptop pass the Q-tip test?

If it is epoxy, vinegar should take it off but be careful not to get it any place else and don't let it soak into the guide ring.   Just a drop on a q-tip again. 

Vinegar or any solvent won't do anything to that epoxy.  Just take an x-acto knife or similar and scrape it out

I have worked in printing for years and we use epoxy for various applications.  To remove it, we use vinegar on delicate surfaces, hands, etc.  Once it is hardened, heat maybe and goo gone or vinegar.

Once cured, nothing I've ever seen will dissolve the thread finish.  Heat may soften it, depending on the brand.  It's more of a casting resin than an adhesive, Soo it won't stick really well to the ceramic.  It'll just pop off if you hit it with a knife.

Going to somewhat hijack this thread. This weekend I snapped the handle of my imx pro 892c while casting a 1/4 oz jig. Never had it happen before, but the blank and most of the cork just snapped in half when I was doing a hard cast like I usually do. This seems like it has to be a factory defect as the rods only a couple months old. Anyone have experience with loomis  warranteeing stuff like this? 

If it is determined to be defective, G. Loomis will replace the rod.

I had a 12 year old rod Fuji reel seat break, and they replaced the rod free.

I’ve recently had guide issues with an NRX and IMX rods.  The insert came out and I had to expoxy the insert back-in.  I had to have a guide replaced on another NRX rod because one of the guide foots came out of the thread wrap.  Instead of sending it in and having to wait for a Loomis repair, I had the guide repaired locally.

For the $$ spent on shipping it back, a local guy can do it much cheaper.  I've repaired many NRXs.
