Squarebill crankbait help

Featured Replies

I have never fished with one. As some of you know, my home lake is shallow, averaging 4-5 feet deep. It also has a lot of eel grass, which makes it difficult to use anything with treble hooks exposed, or any bait that runs even moderately deep.

What do y’all suggest for a squarebill in my situation? I doubt if these fish have ever seen one... so they might be all over it.

Use a stop and go retrieve allowing the lure to rise on the pauses or upsize your line to 15lb to keep it running shallower above the grass. You could also just reel it back in extra slow but the deflection factor would be lost.

This is a good starter kit IMO

I would buy a floating crank bait then just reel for a sec then let it float up then reapeat.

Something like the Mann's 1-Minus?  I don't know otherwise.     jj

I ran into a similar problem when I fished ponds. I used a Lucky Craft 1.5 SSR, while not a squarebill by definition, they seemed to be they only thing I could keep out of the grass.

This thing was a monster for me on my neighborhood lake/pond that has the exact structure and grass situation as yours. 6th Sense Movement 80X. Its a 1-3 ft wide-wobble crank. Burn, burn, pause. They would hit it on the pause.

Rebel wee r. If you go in this direction send me a private message.

Might give a KVD 1.0 a try. These little baits are one of the most overlooked and underated baits, that have caught me good size melons up to 6pd8oz. Change the hooks out to Kvd 1x2xshorts. Or you might try using single hook replacements.

forgot something

Wake Bait. Wakebaits will stay 0-1' more or less. That could work. I like the Berkley wakebull

Mann's Baby 1- run it over top of the grass.
