Trolling motor orientation

Featured Replies

Probably a weird question, but...

Is there a correct way to stow your trolling motor? I've seen some guys have the propeller to the outside of the boat and others to the inside. Since I've been wondering about this, I've seen far more to the inside. So, is this personal preference or is there a correct way?

When I had a bassboat I always stowed with prop facing outside of the boat.
The only reason why was I hit the on button once, ok maybe two or three times and chewed up the gel coat.

oh if I was putting the cover on then prop in to protect the cover

I personally stow mine to the inside. Probably because Like GTN said when I tow with cover on it needs to be facing in so as not to tear the cover.

Generally, I would say prop in, but with the Ultrex, the head is so darn big that I can barely get the cover on the boat with the prop in, so I turn in prop out.

I very seldom tow with cover on.  Don't like the way it scuffs the gelcoat, but if I did, I would put a towel over the TM prop.

It is all personal preference. When I am on the water it is usually prop out. Water from prop runs back into lake instead of my carpet. If I am towing the boat it is prop in. Just in case I have to use the tarp.

Prop out for me, prop in has too many opportunities for damage to me or the boat.  If I am using the cover and going far I put a towel over the prop to avoid any wear on the cover.

A swimming noodle, cut to size with a slit in it and placed on the prop blades works to protect the cover.

Good question.  I've seen both.  I always stow mine with prop inward.

I don't use my travel cover very often.  Maybe twice a year.

Since 2014 I could store it either way - out for fishing and in to keep me from walking into the prop. After recently replacing the Lowrance transducer with the new Garmin transducer it appears to me I'm going to have to pick a direction and stick to it - and that's with the prop outside. The wire on the Garmin exits the transducer on the side instead of the front and is in danger of getting pinched when I rotate the prop inside.

We'll see someday soon. The garage is below freezing. :)

Seems to be just a matter of preference. I see reasoning for both ways. Interesting!
