Thin, regular, or thick hooks? Here’s how to know when to use each hook type.

Thanks, Glenn.  I have moved to using much lighter hooks than I did years ago.  

- I am using better hooks than I used to. 

- At some point I realized  that I have never lost a fish due to bent hook

- I fish almost exclusively from a kayak now.  The difference is that I still set the hook hard but rarely with the kind of eye-crossing force that I might from a boat.

- I am 100% certain that thinner hooks, especially light wire hooks, penetrate far better. 

More fish in the boat. 

@Choporoz I'm also a thinner hook guy in the kayak. I don't have the same amount of force available to me as when I'm standing in a boat, so thinner hooks are the way to go for me.

Since we are on the topic of hooks, albeit a little off of the specific topic, I have a question.

 

I have started using barbless hooks for my Wacky Rig and Neko Rigged Worms. I usually use size 1 or 1/0 when using barbed hooks, but for some reason when I first started using barbless, I bought 2/0 and they worked out great. I recently stocked up on some size 1 though, and I'm now wondering if there is a need to up the size from your normally used barbed hook size when using barbless, or if it's ok to stick with the same size barbless as I have always used when using barbed hooks?  Thanks!

 

I realize I should of asked this question before I stocked up on 75 size 1 barbless hooks.

I haven't had a chance to use any of the new hooks yet due to ice, so I'm not asking because I have experienced a problem with the new hooks or anything.

No need to change a thing. I suppose an argument could be made that a larger hook has more area to help keep a fish pinned, but I’ve never had issues using stock size barbless, and if I had to guess, most people probably just take their existing hooks and pinch or shave down the barb when going that route instead of buying new hooks (i.e., by default, they are using the same hook size).

Yes, that's what most people tell me they do and suggest that I do, but I want to save my barbed hooks for fishing kayak tournaments. You bring up a good point though, if they are just crushing their barbs, then they are using the same size, Thanks!

Good video Glenn.  One thing to add, KEEP YOUR HOOKS SHARP OR REPLACE THEM.  I like keeping a hook sharpener in my shirt pocket to touch them up
