Hair jigs

Featured Replies

Guys, I found an affinity for using hair jigs this winter. Do you all have any specific brands, types or styles you prefer? How about tackle? If you tie your own, I'd love to discuss that with you.

These are fish from big spring branches. The water bubbles up between 53 and 58 degrees all year then empties into bigger rivers.

I tie my own in many color patterns.

I thought about buying hair jigs but then I saw the prices, threw up in my mouth, and went back to my tying vise.

Fish them all the time in sub 40 degree water. I made this head but my buddy ties them for me using bear hair.

Hair jigs work when little else will.  I got into some fish yesterday, it was a grind at first.  I caught a few on 2 and 3" ktechs then I went to a small hair jig and it went from slow to a fish every 2 or 3 casts.  There are a bunch of good one on the market, just be prepared to pay a premium price.  I think tying them yourself id the way to go for sure.  I like darter and ball heads, but the most important parts of the jighead is the 90* line tie and a light wire hook IMO.  I like synthetic craft hair, it can be a pain to work with but its worth the hassle.  Craft hair comes in tons of colors, is readily available, has good action and is buoyant. Any cheap beginners fly tying kit will have all the tools to make tying much easier.

Rutter's hair jigs. 1/8 or 1/4 ounce, several colors, $22/dozen. On FB

I have bought several dozen from Andy's. TW had them on a deep sale over the holidays. I prefer bear hair, but the synthetic works too.

You aren't kidding. Those Feiders are pricey aa heck, but they look good. I like the Andy's for cost.

I looked at the Feider's today, $10 for 2 is steep. I haven't had much luck with hair jigs

Yeah, it's literally just marabou feathers tied onto a jig head. $10 a pair? No thanks.

Anyone looking for bare Fielder jigheads in 1/8oz let me know as I have some I could trade. Making 200 for someone once the hooks arrive from Barlows Tackle.

Must have gone to Scheel's. Bass Pro carries Kalin's marabou jigs occasionally. I got ahold of Rutter's and have 2 dozen being made in my favorite colors.

North Star custom jigs, Brains custom tackle, Punsher tackle all make hair jigs.

PS, search “hair jigs”

Colors; 1) Black/brown/purple, )2 Brown/green, 3) black/green/white and 4) brown/chartreuse/red.

Trailer Uncle Josh #11 is available now.

PM email and will send a few photos for examples.

Feider Flys are just darter head jigs, painted black and tied with a slightly longer length of Marabou.   In fact it is an Outkast Tackle darter head just with Marabou tied onto it.

Very easy to make yourself.

I love tying my own. I tie a lot of smaller jigs for panfish, trout and salmon. Recently started tying bass jigs. Been working good for me.
