Looking to try out some high end spinning reels. Suggestions needed!

Featured Replies

So my cousin in buying a pair of stradic ci4’s off me, which leaves me with 1 stradic fk, and 1 stradic ci4+ Left and need to replace 2 reels.

Set ups are

nrx 852s, expride 7’ light +, glx 822 dsr, and an e6x 2 pieces for my northern walleye trips (can’t bring 1 piece rods as I broke too many lol). So I’d most like throw the stradic fk on the e6x, and the ci4+ on the glx, but would like to try some higher end spinning reels.

any suggestions on what to try.

id prefer not to spend 1000-1100 on a Stella but who knows. I’m open to anything above the stradic line (love them just want to try higher to see if there worth it). Kind of a shimano guy but hear the daiwa spinning might be nicer

How much are you willing to invest? Shimano and Penn make excellent spinning reels and you can easily find one over $300 if that is what you want. Lots of people like the Shimano Stella, Sustain, etc. I prefer a Shimano Stradic since it is a very nice reel and doesn't cost too much considering how good it is.

Well about 10 years ago I bought two Pflueger Patriarch spinning reels. They were $200 each. I have used them hard and often. I am more than impressed with them and never regretted this purchase. Ten years sounds like a long life for a hard used reel.. Yes, I have had a bail spring go bad and somehow bent the shaft on one.... But get this, I sent them in for repair to the Pflueger repair center and they where repaired and sent back ~ NO CHARGE and postage paid! This was when the reels were 6  or 7 years old!  They also sent a new fancy spool, free.

So I'm sure there are many fine high end reels out there but I have only tried these high end reels and I'm glad I did. If they ever do wear out or Pflueger  stops repairing them I will by more... And a fine looking reel to boot.

I’ve been looking into this myself. According to what I’ve read, the twin power is in a no man’s land between the Stradic FL/Vanford and the Excsense, Vanquish, and Stellas. It is said there isn’t enough differentiation from the $200 reels to justify the price point so you might as well step up. But I’ve handled one in person and they definitely feel like an upgrade to me. Still making up my mind there on what I think so I’m following this with interest.

I’d throw the Daiwa Luvias out there for consideration.

The one that has my attention is the new magnesium-bodied '21 Luvias Airity - going to sell for about $500, and Japan vendors are taking deposits for pre-order.  Luvias is the first Daiwa with braid-specific shallow spools, and the switch from plastic to magnesium body is a nice upgrade.

Of course the '21 model introduction also means you can get good buys on the '20 Luvias plastic-body reel right now.

This are available from digitaka already.

Most have already sold out.

My two 2500s came in in about 5 days from Japan.

Shimano Exsence. It is getting a 2021 refresh. Incredible reel.

I have one spinning combo only, and thats G-Loomis conquest 842S rod and Shimano Excence 3000.

Have no comment on rod because that high end as it gets, But about reel don't go to something very expensive like twin power, Belive me that excennce performes as good as $800+ reels, So smooth and perfect in anyway.

Check out the Twin Power, you get most of the advantages of the Stella, but its a little cheaper

Excellent reel.  You can save a good deal of money buying the JDM variant.  A friend did that and saved about $100.

I’ve been debating an exsence for some time, maybe that will be one to try. I’d like the other to maybe be daiwa as every reel I own is shimano (12)
