Spinnerbait hook choice

EC Mustad, VMC AND Owner spinnerbait hooks all seem to be a relatively similar pricepoint. What is everyones preference and why. Im wanting to start making some lures to sell locally (hobby more than profit, not a business post either) so i want to provide baits that people will want. Lean 3/0 in 1/4 and 3/8. I like the idea of black nickel as there is alot of clear water and thinking the baits are going to be a more compact presentation.

Anything black nickel and needlepoint should move well. Not certain things like cutting points (Owners?) would be considered a needed upgrade on a spinnerbait, and traditional sliced points would likely be viewed as a step down in quality these days. Just talking out loud here...

I think thats my thing. I want something that is viewed as solid quality. Catching fisherman as well as catching fish. I also want bang for the buck. I really dont expect to make money off these, just want to recoup my cost and possibly alittle extra to put towards my addiction

Most of what I use are Gamakatsu for nickel and VMC for black with others occasionally in the mix. You need to figure out how long of a shank you want as it will determine what is available. To me the two best things to spend money for quality are the hook and swivel.

Thanks Allan. The black VMC’s seem to be about right size wise. I like that they go down to 1/0. I can do a really downsized presentation with those

If you like the smaller hooks look into Daiichi. They are what I have been using on what I consider micro baits.

I don't make the heads myself I buy them premade and painted but I always look for Mustad. I don't have a good reason except that they always work well so I stick with them.

Brad,

Mustad or Eagle Claw lazer points are the most economical cost wise and are the best selling in my opinion. If you want to recoup money for bulk spinnerbaits, don't use Gami's they are expensive. Also most spinnerbait hooks are bright nickle. These seem to sell the best for me. If you are looking for some hooks, PM me.

I use nickel Mustads. Very nice and sharp hooks. Eagle Claw spinnerbait hooks seem to be a bit smaller than other companies hooks in the same sizes so take that into account if you order EC.

Thanks, EC is what i used on my first round and they did fine. Im leaning towards a smaller profile so i may end up going with them again.

I liked them all except for the Gamakatsu, I lost a lot of fish on that hook. For the last several years I've been using the VMC 7250 black nickel, it is an awesome hook!!! The hook is strong with a good point that has taken more abuse off of rock without folding over or becoming dull than any other hook.

Gamakatsu are my favorite I just wish they made them in black nickel.

Only issue with them is they can never be sharpened again.

Fluorine coated hook best

black nickel second best

shiny nickel meh. Most have this option and i tend to live with it.

3/0 for me is too small for a general spinnerbait. Maybe on the 1/4oz its ok

I like 5/0 or 6/0 long shank with a good size gap. This is what the guy that builds mine uses. Since using the larger hooks I miss less short strikers. I don't have to deal with a trailer hook.

I use these larger hooks in nickel in clear water 3-20'+ visibility and don't know that it matters.

Brands Gamakatsu or Owner would be my first choice

I personally would choose VMC over Mustad

Mustad would come in third for me
