My dad seems to have a talent for breaking off on fish, but this one was a first for me. He was fighting a big bass back to the boat, it broke off, and he reeled in expecting to see a broken knot or lost leader but instead pulled up half of a hook... Brand new out of the package, not some old rusty thin wire junk or anything like that. Have you ever seen or even heard of this?

I had a buddy tell me it happened to him. I was skeptical, but I guess anything is possible. I would think the hook had to have been compromised in some way. 

 

If you don't want to share I understand, but what kind of hook was it. 

Had some BPS XPS EWG worm hooks do that to me.

Never.  Weird.  But my bass are tiny

I got into something BIG with a ned rig (ned lockz head) a couple years ago. I fought with it for a few minutes then it just decided to go and sit on the bottom. When I tried to get it up, it moved a few feet and then nothing. I reeled in a ned rig with the hook broken about midway in the bend. I know it is likely the hook failed in a big cat, but I want to believe a massive turtle bit it off.

Ive broken quite a few hooks on snags and even had a few break when unhooking a fish.  I lost a good fish last year when my Gami EWG bent out.  Ive used them for almost 20 years without bending one on a fish like that.  I was using a SC ML so I think it was just a dud hook.  Never lost a fish because of a hook breaking though.

I've heard of several people breaking off new hooks on Zman baits and especially their Ned rig jigheads.

I did ned rig jighead twice, one time from the bend and one time from where shaft attached to jighead.

those two where fish but I broke 7/0 mustard circle hook by a log LOL
