Replacement hooks

Featured Replies

I learned the hard way! Back into fishing again after a 30 year hiatus and my old crankbaits still catch fish. The only problem is I'm having a hard time setting the hook. Lost 2 decent fish today that I thought I had set the hook, but both spit it.  I should've known better. They were very well used 30 years ago. What would your recommendation be for replacement treble hooks.

For general use on most crank/jerkbaits - I have two options that I use.

Prime choice: Owner Stinger ST-41

Value Choice: VMC 9650

It depends on the equipment I'm using. For my Med/Mod combo, I like light wire hooks for ease of penetration.   https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/mustad-ultrapoint-kvd-elite-round-bend-treble-hook

For bigger baits and a Med Hvy/ Mod combo, I go with a hook that's a little more stout and seems to hold on to the fish extremely well. https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/vmc-outbarb-1x-treble-hook

I'm not a big fan of 3X short shank trebles as I had difficulty getting good hook sets and seemed to loose more fish with them.

Owner ST 36 are my main hook of choice. The Berkley Fusion 19 trebles are also very nice and an overlooked option as well.

I remember the days of sharpening hooks - especially for salt and stainless.

Tinkering in the garage last evening, used my old hook sharpener for for the right-size punch, and tapped the end with a jeweler's hammer.

Hooks are so much better, harder and sharper than they used to be.

They use much better alloys, better forming and heat treatment, and chemical sharpening on super-sharp tips.

Owner and VMC both sell direct online, both have low cost mail options, better than many of the package stores.

Even Eagle Claw is using Japanese hook technology, but if you shop in Japan, you can find more choices in specialized hooks that, for example, Owner (Cultiva) doesn't import to our market.

I like the Owner ST's and have had good luck with the Mustard short shank ones that have KVD's face on the pack.
