Large huddleston trout swimbaits (hook question)

Featured Replies

So I know many people dont fish some of these trout lures but, I have a weedless huddleston model and hookups are poor, would it be worth sticking a treble hook on the back, with a short 4 inch leader tied to the shank of the hook?

Are you fishing the 8 or 6" Hudds.?

Yes, you could always add a stinger hook on top.

I only fish the 6" weedless hudds, and find that a hardhookset is required, I also wait just a tad before setting the hook, and using at least 17 to 20 lb line helps.

I'm sure you probably know what a Butch Brown Rig is, but I'll mention it just in case.

Okay this will help me out alot, thankyou, will try a stinger hook

Yes the hook sets are poor on the weedless hudds but they get chewed.  Buy a top hook clip it, run a treble.

I know this will raise eyebrows but the Butch Brown style treble hook mod the treble hook can face backwards to make it weedless, still hooks the bass.

Faster rod, heavier line, and dunking your Hudd in boiling water a few seconds will soften it allowing it to compress better. Just don't dip the head.

Good rigging ideas above, just wanted to add this: chances are, if you fish the Hudd low and slow and fish it often, you'll eventually lose it, ask me how I know. If/when you do, a cheaper option is the 8" Savage Gear RTF (ready to fish) Pulse Tail trout ($19.99 vs $32.99 for the 8" Hudd). The Pulse Tail is Savage's version of the vortex tail of the Hudd, has the same slow, soft, natural wobble that's great for cold water especially. These new RTF ones have a jig hook up front and a pre-rigged stinger over the tail, which for all us stinger-runners is a Godsend, eliminates the home-rigged stinger hassle. Just food for thought, keep grinding!

Ah yes, I even saw this in a walmart, the big one was 20 and they had a 6 inch one for only $10,. they even had three 8 inch shad style huddleston swimbaits for 10 dollars. I think savage gear is on to something

Wow, you've got these in Wally's by you? You're lucky, take advantage. And yeah, Savage Gear is definitely onto something.

yeah in sandiego their everywhere, I also picked up a shakesphere 7 foot medium heavy with winn grips, it isnt the most sensitive, but it is graphite and its a good beater rod, expecially for only 20 dollars, it isnt as sensitive as my pheonix or TFO rod but, you can tell u get a  bite by watching the line,. plus it has a skeleton grip. Walmart has a ton of really interesting lures, plus they have their own fishing brand. They make knock off kaitechs which I have caught a few bass on, you get 5 swimbaits for two dollars, its a fire deal, their called ozark trails. they also got frogs for 2 dollars, which are good, they dont walk amazingly but they look good in water. My favorite is their flukes, a pack of flukes for 1.50. really worth checking out their fishing section.
