Reflecting on 2021, my year of the broken rod

Featured Replies

I have fished since I was a kid and never broke any rods but maybe the odd one here and there. This year I broke 5 rods. Nothing expensive but rods that meant a lot to me. 3 were inexpensive Shimanos that I’ve used forever and were the cats behind. A new Falcon which was $130 and the most expensive and an inexpensive Berkeley. I am needing new rods absolutely and I always dreamed of having nice rods someday but now think I am not worthy of anything above an Ugly Stik. I broke them doing stupid things and I don’t expect that to change knowing me. I just thought I’d give you guys something to face palm to.

Got an academy sports anywhere near you?  I use $13 rods from there. They are gray colored fiberglass rods, I think they say anglers choice on them. That way I don’t have to baby them and don’t care if I break them

I take care of my gear in storage and transport, but once I am fishing, all bets are off :)

we are swinging long rods pretty hard, matter of time before you hit something with the rod. Happen to me a few weeks ago casting from a buddy's boat, he had the trolling motor up high and I hit it pretty hard. Not sure if the was the rod or the lure that hit the motor. My buddy did the same thing 5 minutes later. Luckily the rods were fine...for now. Can't count how many times a bullet weight has hit my rod when pulling free from a snag.

It happens, don't be too hard on yourself. Sounds like the rods gave you a long service life, now you get to try some new stuff. Good luck and my only advice is that there should be some good sales pretty soon.

I've only broken one rod in my life, and it was a 13Fishing Omen Green on a bad high-stick set.

I was taking the lure out of the water when the redfish snagged it, and I bad-set just as he exploded.

13Fishing gave me a great warranty replacement, and I finished the trip with my Cabelas 3-pc back-up - made from TFO Traveler blank, and bought on close-out for $50.

Not my favorite rod, does the job in a pinch.

I also forgot to add that rods aren’t that hard to fix. I learned some tips from a few people on here  Thread epoxy and an insert or sleeve from a broken rod will do the trick

Somebody's gonna report you to the RPS.? I've been lucky and never broke one of my rods but I've had other folks break a couple. If I'd of broke 5 by this point in the year I'd likey winterize my boat and just go hunting. But thankfully that's not the case so I'll just fish on through the rest of the year.

I got that deafening CRACK yesterday.   It just stuns...leaving you disoriented and flustered and mad/sad.

Not proud to admit to six broken rods between wife and I over last 5 or 6 years.  Two in doors (car and house), two on fish, and two on snags.  Yesterday was a DX744 that I never considered could break.  It has been one abused workhorse for quite a few years.

You described it accurately!! I chose the Falcon rod as my Father’s Day gift to myself for my 2 year old daughter and got to use it for like 45 mins til 8 inches of rod snapped as cleanly as if it had been cut by a laser. Disgusted mad sad.

I normally break plenty because I treat them terribly and they are very cheap to begin with. Somehow this year I think I’ve only had to replace tips that were fraying line

(knock on wood)
