I used to jig  fish for river smallies in Nc in the winter, it was tough going….. seemed like you had to put the bait right in front of them. You had to twitch the jig along the bottom real slow. I guess you had to pull it right in front of them before they’d take it.  

I had a couple days lately where the bass were just biting the claws of the jig trailer. They would swim around with it for 5 seconds before I would set the hook and i still was getting back a jig with no claws. Switched to a T rigged Rage Craw and started catching those bass.

Good tip

  I'm not the only one who removes the weed-guards at times . I've lost some nice fish when weed guards were not needed . Texas rigs , same thing . Rig it with  the hook exposed   or on a jig head when feasible  .

Looks like Horizontal Jigging to me.

If you need a weed guard use a Hitchhiker spring and attach a 2” piece of finesse of skin hooked worm, works good.

Our local SoCal big bass tend to 20’ to 30’ year around outside the spawn.

Thanks Glenn.  Good tip on the light bites. Over the years I've noticed that when the water is cold the bass will give the bait a quick bite and then back off from it.  If you stop the bait and let it drop to the bottom then the bass will come back and pick it up.

Don't be afraid to fish a jig fast during winter!

I bought one of those wobble football head weights and I've been trying it with a craw with no luck so far. I'll speed it up and see if that helps.
