Found a honey hole today…. But was unable to land fish ?

Featured Replies

What to do in  a situation like that? was exploring around today with no luck, until I found this small pond behind a shopping plaza the place looked like abandoned, the pond had a thick grass on the edge rooted on water very tall grass  grass was so tall that looked like a  wall around the pond I knew was going to be complicated to fish there but tried anyway, first cast a bite and big bass on the line.. when reeling back in was impossible to remove the bass from the water the fish went straight the the top of the thick grass and he did something that my line got stuck there and he was stuck with the line with a hook on his mouth, tried everything, even went inside the water to get the bass, knowing alligators could be there went to the water anyway wanted to save the bass and release him, was impossible ..was unable to reach, totally frustrated watched the bass trying to jump on the grass don't know if he was able to return to water or not… frustrated with the situation tried another spots around the lake every single cast with a frog or worm got a bite, but was so afraid to lose another bass that I started reeling fast and lost them.. the pond was incredible looks like the bass there never saw and artificial  before, they are extremely aggressive… but was totally unable to land the fish. Want to go there again, but not sure what to do to land those fish.

Get a belly boat or a kayak.

Maybe it's time to break out the XH gear.  If it happens again and it's on 65lb braid you can just wrap a stick and walk back till you have a fish and a salad.  Sounds like a spot you need to get back to though.  Honey hole indeed.

He may be talking about cattails. A friend of mine has a pond on his property that is surrounded by a wide band of them. Impossible to fish without a boat of some kind.

I've seen many places like this here in south Florida with walls of tall grass lining the whole pond with very few openings to fish. You have a few choices. You can fish like you've been doing and try to keep the bass up high to get them over the grass but that may be futile on any good sized fish and you'll only end up doing them more harm than good.  Or you can find an area that has the easiest excess and cut away as much brush as you can to facilitate even better fishing. Or you can scoot out over the mess with a kayak. Or, lastly, you can cut your losses and move on to another location. All depends on how much time and effort you want to commit. Always a way, a will, a way.

Appreciate the response the idea to move to another place is fine but when you find a honey hole like that is hard to let it go lol

Like I said, it all depends on how far you want to go to gain access. It also depends on who owns the property and what you can do with it. Here in South Florida a lot of these places have pretty tight restrictions so you might want to look into that to see what your options are.

Be careful about removing brush or vegetation on property that isn’t yours. I assume it’s a public pond since the OP was already fishing it, but altering a shoreline here in Minnesota is definitely illegal if it’s public.

I’d go the kayak route before I started hacking at shoreline vegetation. It’s gonna just grow back anyways.

Yes indeed, I mentioned the same thing to the OP earlier up about knowing who owns the property and what can and cannot be done on it….don’t need no guns going off or arrest being made!
