Leader?

Featured Replies

I have two rods, one with 10 lb mono and another with braid, with braid i always use a leader, but with the mono do i have to? I use a fluoro leader which i know induces the bait to sink, which could be a problem when throwing topwater? And if i dont use a leader, should i use a swivel or just attach to the main line, just because i dont want my line to twist

Both on spinning reels? I wouldn't use a leader in either case on the mono one, but I'd probably look into switching that one to braid with a mono leader too. You shouldn't have excessive line twist with any decent reel unless you spooled the line wrong, are throwing baits that REALLY induce twist like inline spinners, or have an extremely loose drag and are allowing fish to take out a ton of line.

Straight mono, no leader needed.

The one reason to use leader on mono main line is to gain abrasion resistance by stepping up the leader diameter and hardness.

This is for targeting seatrout on 5-lb test, with 9-lb hard leader - bycatch includes snook and redfish.

You guys ever have problems with line twist though? I used a texas rigged senko and i cast it out, then when it gets closer to me sometimes i just reel it in, and this twists the main line pretty bad

Also, would i need a leader for these? Or at least a swivel?

Not those.

A few baits that tend to spin are better used with a swivel. Aside from those, spinning reels twist line. Just the nature of the beast. If you'd like to get away from that issue, learn to use a baitcaster. They're not without their own challenges in the beginning, but in general, line twist isn't one of them.

Birdsnest is though, lol.

The abrasion advantage of fluoro  over a quality mono like Original Stren or Trilene XT is minimal. If you're getting line twist using mono, you're likely getting line twist using braid. With braid, you won't notice it until it gets excessive and then you'll be frustrated with it constantly wrapping around your rod tip.

Using a small, quality ball bearing swivel to attach your leader or adding one 18in. or so up your mono line will eliminate most of the line twist issues. Manually closing the bail on your spinning reel will also eliminate a lot of twist.

I use a mono leader often in the canals I fish for bass since these canals have tarpon, snook, snakeheads, and other fish with tough mouths.

I know you didn’t ask, but if you ever do want to learn baitcasting reels start with mono. I’ve been using baitcasters for about a year and a half and bought a 1400 yard spool of Trilene XT 14lb for like $20. If I get a backlash that’s exceptionally bad, I can just respool and it doesn’t cost much.

This is something I did after making the mistake of starting with fluorocarbon. 3 spools of Sunline Sniper later……

Or you could use braid, pull the backlash out, and keep fishing!

(Nothing against mono...)

True! But learning to pick out a backlash in mono is more similar to picking one out in fluorocarbon.

I use a leader on everything.

Mostly wire ('Cuz: pike and musky) but I rig inexpensive stuff like Senkos and Ned rigs with about 7 ft. of Maxima leader.

Maxima isn't something I see a lot of related to gear...it's kind of a fly-fishing thing, which is where I got it.
