Do you find the Lobina Rico more effective than the Rio Rico for river smallmouth?

Featured Replies

I don't fish river smallies, but tidal largies, so maybe this info isn't applicable to you. I use the smaller Rico on blue bird sky days in spots with good tidal flow. The smaller Rico makes a lot less noise when hitting the water and I think spooks less fish that are tight to cover. The Rio Rico makes more noise when hitting the water, so I tend to use that on more overcast days or choppier water where I think it won't spook fish, and maybe need to draw them more. If I had to choose between the two, the smaller Rico is more effective for me.

I don’t fish that brand but if I did it would most likely be a 1/4 oz. or 5/16 oz. version I’d throw. When I start throwing bigger 1/2 oz. Pop R’s I don’t do as well.

Why or why not?

Not know anything about that brand other than it’s multiple sizes. What’s with them? Higher Quality?

Two different lures. The original Rico is a spitting popper, the Rio Rico is more of a blooper, walker.

Depends, if you have chop and current, I'd go with the Rio, if it's dead calm or something close to it, it's hard to beat the original Rico. I find SM aren't as fuzzy as LMBs when it comes to top water lures.

The more chop on the surface the more action I want from the bait.

And I love to walk the dog
