Has anyone tried the brand new SLX DC XT? It's supposed to be available by this month. 

 

I didn't pay much attention to the SLX line, but this one really piqued my interest. It almost has everything: I-DC5 brake as what Conquest DC uses, the newest MGL 3 spool, X-ship, Micromodule gears, 70 spool for lighter lures... 

 

Shimano usually makes sure their reels from different price point have matching level of features, but IMO this one is definitely eating up the market of the new Scorpion DC, as well as the Curado DC. Why?

Yeah I have been watching this one for awhile, not for me but for a friend. For the price point it seems pretty good but then again from my point of view, it is just a rebadged, or reuse old 2017 scorpion DC 100 frame (Curado i series???)The new scorpion DC 150 in K frame also have i-DC5 and price about the same as SLX. Compare between SLX line and Scorpion line, I would go with Scorpion if price is not much different. But if you like the old i series frame SLX is not bad either. I think Shimano try to make SLX DC XT line available in Europe just like SLX bfs.

Anyway, I guess you're right. This is a Scorpion level reel in SLX disguise. Its most attractive thing for me is the combination of I-DC5 with MGL 3 spool, while even the new Scorpion DC is just using the regular MGL spool. I have tried the MGL 3 spool; it's quite impressive on casting distance, even compared to regular MGL.

Is there a safe place to preorder one of these?

It isn't available to US market yet, you'll need to find it in Japan sites. As far as I know, Japan Tackle takes pre-orders.

i preordered one from JapanTackle on october 1. at that time projected delivery time to them was late october. ,lefty reels in november. schedule has now been delayed until november for my reel. i ordered cork knobs at start of covid. snafus hit with quarantine of all shipments worldwide. jun at japantackle refunded my money, even after having sent my shipment. months later when the knobs showed up i let jun know. he sent me a paypal invoice which i promptly paid.

Got mine on Monday and what I've been waiting for! A very compact DC reel. It's close to 2020 Metanium in terms of size, maybe a longer nose but width feels about the same.

Nice, where you get yours? After seeing, that reel test guy, I checked JLS and all gone, anywhere else still on December schedule, even email Digitaka for ETA with no reply yet.

I must’ve to admit after seeing the reel (from that reel test guy). This is one interesting DC reel and don’t mind owning one myself. Do I need DC reel?, nope, but just for a change and to learn different systems why not????.

It is still on 200i frame but with some modification to narrow the width down to 70 size, not a bad move. The most interesting to me is 6.8oz i-DC5 equipped, unheard off and  very tempting indeed. The MGLiii spool with 16 grams weight is quite nice but I don’t think gonna benefit ME much. I spooled 10lb hybrid line about 100 yds on my CQ 101DC and can cast 3-5 grams weight free rig comfortably. Being 70 size spool, might fit 75-80yds make total spool weight even less and should make casting that weight range even easier.

It is very good candidate reel indeed for those that want light line, light weight DC reel for some challenge. 
Again this is my conclusion to a friend, with bottom line of getting one for him. For myself, I don’t know but might be a nice pair to this  if I ever want “right hand” DC reel.

 

 

The left-handed version is available in Japan now. With shipping, it'll cost ~$210. IMO that's a bit much for a DC reel with so-so craftsmanship.  But, for someone who wants to try a DC reel with great casting performance, this may be a good choice. 

 

 

I'm very interested in the Shimano SLX DC XT for throwing light Ned rigs from Z-Man. Do those of you experienced with the SLX DC XT think it would throw the 1/10 oz/2.8g mushroomhead jig? 

The new Scorpion Dc is very overbreaked. Great reel for flipping, pitching, skipping, and close quarters. You will not cast as smooth as the slx dc xt. The new slx dc xt is like the 2017 scorpion dc, great do everything reel with upgraded breaks. Although I do miss the auto feature as I feel that was always the best setting to be on. Definitely a curado dc killer, but the Scorpion DC is just a different reel compared to the other two. 

Anyone get any real world fishing on this reel yet?   I’m at a toss up of getting one of these or another 21 zillion sv.   ?

I snatched one late last season, so maybe 1 or 2 days with it. First impressions, most compact DC reel ever! I hated how all the DC's were bulky 100-200 size type reels, because they couldn't fit the DC brake. Somehow to they managed it on the SLX DC XT. It looks/feels like a Curado I but much more narrow, like they removed the frame material to fit the MGL III's narrow spool. I think it's close to a 2020 Metanium in terms of palming. I don't have a Curado 70 to compare, but it feels great!

 

Casting feels like any other DC reel I've used, great distance but ease of use. The lightest lure I tested was a Jackall Kaera (it's 3/8 oz, the package claimed 1/2 oz), which my larger frog reels struggles to cast. It casts it fairly well.

What's your thoughts on the SLX DC XT versus the Zillions?

I really like the SLX DC XT a lot.  I’ve had other DC reels but sold them quickly, I have 2 of these SLX’s and they’re just alot of fun to use.  Small and compact.   They cast far and effortlessly and a wide range of baits.   I use them more than my Zillions reels and Steez reels.  Mine are still as smooth as the day I got them.   I feel like the Zillions were great when they came out and the hype was reel but now after a few seasons and cleanings, I don’t feel my zillions are as smooth as they use to be.  Plus with how good the new tatula 100s are, I don’t feel the need to go up to another zillion.   I put one through the paces the other day and it was launching 1/4oz mini max with ease.   
 

having said that, I think everyone needs at least one zillion SV and having an SLX DC XT isn’t a bad idea either. I’d take another one over a Zillion which seems crazy.    But I just really like how they cast and fish.  And I don’t need a DC reel but it’s fun. SLX DC XTs and my Bantam MGLs have become my go to reels lately.  I’ve even lost interest in my ‘22 Zillion HD

I came across this thread because I just bought a SLX DC XT and Scorpion DC after watching "The Reel Test" on Youtube. These are my 1st DC reels. I bought the SLX to avoid backlashing when  throwing wind resistant plugs like Rapala DT's. I am blown away with the SLX. From throwing 4" unweighted senkos to 1/2 oz plugs I've not had a backlash. The Scorpion is a little tricker. In The Reel Test video he mentions that with the SLX you can take the side adjustment down to 1 but the Scorpion is best left at 2. I've found at 1, I was experiencing some backlashes. My Zillion and other reels might be collecting some dust.
