rod for castable deeper pro sonar

Featured Replies

i'm planning on getting a deeper pro chirp, which weighs about 3.2 oz. most of my rods are pretty light, especially on the lure rating - most are rated up to  1/2 to 1 oz or so... i have my surf rod, a 10' okuma that casts up to 8 oz. i don't want to lug that thing around tho, just for a sonar ball.

any suggestions on a relatively nice uh... do-various-things rod, that can manage to cast 3.2 oz? i would prefer using spinning rods. that seems the easiest. i think i'm used to my light set ups, unsure how heavy a lure rating i'd need.  maybe 2 oz? or is that simply too light.....

for line i'd be thinking of about 40# or more. i don't want my deeper pro chirp to go sailing off into wherever-land on a cast. i think this would be for fresh water.

thanks! happy holidays....

iRod Jr Swimbait 7'8" MH 1-4 oz $149. You can do a lot with this rod from 1/2oz chatterbaits to nearly 4oz treble swim baits. Tatula 200 $169. 20 lb Big Game mono.

Wait for the BF sale next week and save $.

I wouldn't use braid, but if you must up it to 85 lb, for when you backlash you'll break it off with anything less. This is highly unlikely with 20lb Big Game though, and you'll still be able to chuck that thing farther than you'll able to chuck most bass baits on this setup.

Seems like an awful lot of money to chuck a sonar ball to me. Can't it be done way cheaper ?

Ya -

Daiwa DX MH - 1-8 oz - $100 before sale - https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Daiwa_DX_Swimbait_Casting_Rods/descpage-DXB.html

Put a Lews American Hero on it - $65 before sale - https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Lews_American_Hero_Speed_Spool_Casting_Reel/descpage-MHMH.html

I'd suggest the same 20# Big Game that Phish did.

With BF sale discounts about $280 out the door if he chooses free shipping.

The Jr. Swim Bait is a very light, versatile rod that has the backbone to throw the Deeper's weight and a tip that'll allow him to throw so much more. It is very much a "do-various-things rod", which is what he asked for. What makes it even better is that its handle length is pretty conventional, so unlike a standard swim bait rod with a 2 foot long-ish handle, it handles like a regular bass rod where typical swim bait rods don't. The iRod will do what he needs it to do with regard to the Deeper Pro, but will also open up opportunities for throwing baits just above a typical 4-5 power MH.

This is a good budget suggestion for throwing the Deeper, but unless he wants to throw swim baits weighing at least 2 1/2 ounces somewhere down the line, it won't have many practical uses compared to the Jr Swimbait. Not even close. I've owned all the DXs listed on that page, so my opinion is first-hand, but it's still just an opinion.

I use a 6'6 Berkley Big Game 1pc Heavy casting rod. I got it for $22 when Amazon had it in stock. https://www.amazon.com/Berkley-Big-Game-Casting-Fishing/dp/B00NOSQH98?th=1 But it's used as a dedicated Deeper rod only....since I don't catfish (purposely at least).

The Deeper is pretty heavy, so you want a fiberglass rod that has a lot of tip for a lob cast. A spinning rod is probably more practical than a baitcaster in case of a backlash, but I've never had a problem with a nice easy lob cast and Tatula SV TW, 50lb cheap generic braid.

Forget the long rods and trying to chuck it really far, if you cast the Deeper too far, you'll lose connection and you have to reel it it to re-establish anyways.

thanks, guys... my rods are okuma, kastking perigees.... shakespeare, but mostly okuma, which seem like nice rods.  so, $30 to $75 each is my standard price for "fine" rods...

@PhishLIi'll check out that jr swim bait rod...  it would be nice to have a versatile, nice rod --- when you pay that much, does it really handle the range of 1/2 oz to 4 oz  baits equally well? i ask that because i havent ever paid  that much ($149) for a rod. my shimano slx rods only go up to maybe 1/2 oz or 3/4 oz at most, but i got the combos, which are around $149.

what is BF?

I'd use the 10'. Its not something youre going to cast and retrieve all day if youre scanning for structure.

i hadn't really thought of that.... but u might be right, at least to start. that pole is so heavy and big --- i got a huge daiwa 5000 on it. it's my crab snare rod! i don't use it for anything else. i don't normally toss anything very heavy. crab snares weigh about 6 oz total...

No problem with a 3/8oz chatterbait with a bulky trailer which comes in at just under an ounce altogether. It handles 3.5 ounces perfectly fine. It's getting pushed a tad at 4 ounces.

Man sales are super easy. You wait until a store lowers the price on an item you want and then buy it. Most stores have sales on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. ?

No housewives or lines online. Sales usually run longer than just Friday.  Hang around here for awhile and we'll help you spend all your money on tackle.

Or... skip the rod and get a Chuckit ball launcher...

I had a deeper chirp when I was bank-bound and it was great. In particular the mapping!

IMO just throw it on your surf rod for a while and you'll get a better feel for what you want in a rod to throw it on, if anything.

The Irods are great, but if you were going to buy your first $150 rod it should go to a setup where you'd get value from the better blank, ie in one of your main presentations. When you do decide to get a rod, the least expensive thing that fits the weight will do just fine; ideally your neighbor's used catfish rod.

If you want the cheapest thing possible then that will probably be some sort of chinease swimbait or catfish rod and reel from ali.  Type in XXH fishing rod and go with what has the most orders.  Get a few swimbaits while you're at it.  Might as well throw some big baits with your big bait rod too.  I have no personal recommendation for a rod and reel but there are options.  There is a large market for snake head and large predatory catfish in Asian markets so rods and reels made to throw 3 oz are abundant and cheap.   Expect it to be a two peice and have no warranty.   I like the looks and popularity of the 1st rod to pop up on a search.  Keep an eye on the total cost including shipping.  If it approaches jdm big bait budget rod territory then pass and buy the good stuff.  For a reel maybe an alijoz 300.  They are popular big bait budget reels.Screenshot_20221123-100016_Chrome.thumb.jpg.84c710c008b09b7d17310cf99f42ea69.jpg

Ok done some more digging.  If it was me I would follow Phil's advice and get something that can also double as a big swimbait rod.  His recommendation is excellent.  If you want a cheap version of the same sort of thing but worse in every way I would gamble on a johncoo shot gun 2.28m xxh and a johncoo mt200 reel for $137.  That's about as budgety big bait as I feel comfortable with.  Anything cheaper is going to be a glass catfish stick and a plastic reel or a cheap ambassadeur knock off.

is the mapping pretty easy to do? i'm assuming the deeper stitches it all together, and i'm picturing just mapping the parts of the lake where i fish... what was the most valuable info you got from the mapping - contour, or vegetation?

i'm unclear what my favorite presentation is... i guess that puts the irod out, for now.  as i said, my spending on rods is in the $20 to $70 or so range.  they seem fine to me!

I haven't casted mine a whole lot but when I did I used an old H action rod that I didn't care about damaging. I have used something like this kite rope holder with a lot of success in that past and I would toss it out --

I’ve had the deeper chirp for a couple years now. I’ve always just sort of lobbed it using any of my medium heavy rods. The connectivity to your phone only works about 20 yards from you if that. So you don’t have to worry about casting it very far. That being said it does work pretty good most of the time. I just wish you could launch it out there a ways further.

thanks guys... i'll try with my surf pole, and see how it goes. then decide on a cat fish pole or rod that can handle about 3 oz weight... i'll keep the costs on my rods down - i am still figuring out what sort of techniques i like...
