I bought a middle of the line reel and when using 8 lb fluorocarbon it goes between the frame and spool with a professional override sometimes.  I've been using old Shimano reels for years and never had it happen.  The line is .011".   Do any of you reel technicians know what the tolerances should be? 

Happened to me last season on my Concept Z.  It happened to me before years ago...don't remember the reel.  I just put it in the 'rare occurance' category.

It will vary by reel and by manufacturer so you're not going to get a clear cut answer.  That said, 8 lb is light for a baitcaster so you're pushing the limits a bit to start with.  If you're going to keep on with the 8 lb you're going to have to learn to deal with it or swap back to a shimano.

Make sure the tension knob isn't too loose, that can make it worse.

Most  8# FC is .009, Berkley 100% FC is .011.

Todays Daiwa and Shimano bait casters have about .005 clearance.

Not really - I run 10-20 lb braid all the time on baitcasters and a lot of others do too.

same here. I have 10lb 832 on one. It’s still pushing the limits though as the OP is seeing.  Not all reels will handle it.

Braid doesn't have memory, and fluoro does, which causes it to coil up during backlash, more prone to cinge into that gap. Still, 8lb fluoro should be ok for Daiwa or Shimano reels. I used to have a reel with a gap so big, 12lb mono would get in there often.

I mean....you could have used it for a heavy line reel instead of trashing it.
