UPDATE!!! SORRY EVERYONE but Photobucket wants me to spend 399 dollars to host my pictures...I just refuse to do that!  You can still check the pics out with this link: http://s709.photobucket.co

  • Picked up my bass raider 3 or 4 months ago and I absolutely love it.  I did a bunch of mods including a casting deck and the deck is rock solid.  It's 3x more stable on my deck than standing in some o

Just got my new Lowrance Mach 4 fish finder home and reading over the book (yawn).

I'm trying to figure out the best placement for the transducer.

My Minn Kota 55lb is mounted on bow, battery in back.

I ordered a small separate 12v hummingbird battery just for the fish finder but it's still shipping.

So anyway, I am just not sure the optimal spot for the transducer.

I prefer mounting on the trolling motor.

Is it practical to mount on trolling motor when it's mounted on bow?

What direction should it be pointing? Away from boat or pointed to go under ?

Yes.  Its a good spot to mount it.  horizontal with the point forward if its a lowrance transducer.  If you mount the transducer in the back of the boat you will already be at least 10ft past what you are seeing on screen.  The very right side of the screen is what you are going over currently so you are actually a little ahead of what you see on screen.

Thank you for the info cdemarse.

Question though, the way it's mounted on the trolly makes me think it would be sending out sonar directly into the wake of the motor. The manual says to find the area with the smoothest flow otherwise it may cause dots and lines on the display.

You have no problems I take it with yours?

No I do not.  The signal come out the flat bottom part not the back end.  So it is sending the signal straight down in front of the prop.

Apparently, a trolling motor does not put out enough turbulence to effect the performance of a transducer.

Here is my rudder I built. I have not used it yet so can't tell you if it works :)

I used 1" PVC , a retractable oar (sawed off the top handle grip and it slid right inside the 1" PVC ). I then used screws on each part to keep the pipe together (didn't want to glue in case I want to undo it and adjust it). The only part with no screws are the T connector itself so it will rotate. It is otherwise held tight in place by the side rails with screws.

As for making sure it does not pop up and fall overboard, I have a small eye hole screw below it in my wood floor to use a tie down on.

Curious, are you guys running a fish finder on your deep cycle battery or do you have the seperate smaller 12v battery?

I have the Lowrance Elite 3x portable so I run it off of the battery that came with it.  I went with that since I use it ice fishing too.

I have my Lowrance Elite 3x running off of my deep cycle battery along with the trolling motor and have not seen any less runtime because of it. I just made sure I had an inline fuse for the FF before the splice into the power wire for trolling motor.

I purchased a small 12v battery to use for my Lowrance Elite 3X finder - works great

I like that. I have been keeping my eye open for an old broken trolling motor but have been unlucky so far. I will try to remember this if I locate the trolling motor. I like the idea of being able to just raise the rudder if needed instead of removing it as we do now.

Hey lilsweeper - I purchased a MK TM bracket off e-bay for $30 - if you don't mind spending that much - it works great for my rudder - I sure there are pictures of it on this thread but you'll have to search for them.  If not let me know and I'll try to repost them.  Actually I'm thinking of doing a video of all the mods I've done to my boat since I first got it 2 years ago.

question.. just got my seat brackets in from academy sports. one of them is missing the black end cap on the footing. are these critical to keeping the bracket in the seat tracks? academy is telling me to contact pelican, just wondering if it's necessary.

I have a Sun Dolphin Sportsmen so I think the seat bases are different but what I did to mine was cut an old garden hose and slipped it over the seat rails - it makes it slide easier and doesn't dig into the plastic boat.  The Sun Dolphin seat rails are solid steal so after one or two times out when I first got it I noticed it was digging in and cutting it up so what not much but I thought long term I would have problems.  So I did the hose trick and it works great.  Hope this is helpful.

great tip, thanks bomber. i think i'll use it a bit as-is and see if i run into any problems like that. if i do, i've got just the right piece of hose to cut.. i knew if i kept it, it would come in handy for something! and the wife calls me a pack rat...

Thanks, I just checked that out and they still have them at $29.99 + $13 shipping. Or i have had one bookmarked probably since January on www.northlandmarine.com for $35 + $7.99 shipping. Same price you see. I just haven't pulled the trigger.

BS,

The two wires attach to the battery posts. You then attach your trolling motor directly to the battery in the rear, or buy a male plug to match the built in female plug in the front and use that set up for the trolling motor to be up front (better option).

Ok, did a little more research on it. From my understanding the wiring is just to place the fuse in-circuit for too many amps. Can't I just buy one of these circuit breakers instead, since most people have problems with the one that comes with the boat. Sorry for the lack of understanding, Electrical wiring isn't my strong suit!

On another topic, I wanted to see what everybody recommended on a fish finder. I've never owned or use one, but definitely want to get one for my Bass Raider. I've heard the hummingbird fishin buddy is nice, but im not sold yet.

I'm running a Lowrance Elite 4 HDI has GPS navionics software. Wish it had side scan but I can't afford the best of both worlds so. It's compact to.

I'm running a Lowrance Elite 3x with a handheld gps beside it. I would like them combined but I had the gps already and did not have the money for the Elite 4 so I have what I have. It has worked out alright for me. I can also say that I can testify that the FF has helped me catch fish.

Here's how I have them mounted:
