I can’t believe no one has taken the “power bfs” phrase and run with it. You all are slippin’ . Lol

Who needs power bfs when we have...

BUBBA BFS

You heard it here first folks! :laughing9:

I have the Phenix feather ML that frydog mentioned earlier. I haven’t tried anything lighter than a 1/16 Ned head and TRD but it works great for that weight.

i have the Phenix Light.  i think it is as you describe perfectly.  i find it too "not whippy" enough..but it sounds like what you are looking for.

i'll be honest, i dont love the handle.  (i have two) the Feather is the first rod i picked up and my first impression was "yuck".   i have gotten used to it, but still.

For you guys with the 'light', how light can you throw on it?  I picked up the kastking reel used on these forums and put it on an older lamiglas I built ages ago.  It a 1/8-1/2 blank with a moderate (maybe moderate fast) action.  I'd call it a ML power.  It will fling a TRD+1/20 a long way.  I can throw a 1/16 head and 2" crappie shad a good ways (about 1/12 oz total weight).  It won't load enough with a trout magnet or little hair jig.  I'd like to try lighter and the 1/8-3/8 rating on this appeals, though I'd prefer 1/16-3/8.  Thoughts?

i'm probably doing it wrong.  when i bought my reel the shop filled it with 8lb flouro.  i think i would go lighter. but i can fling a 1/16th with a small body bait fairly easily.

Me too.  Sounds like an oxymoron.  "ultra-light musky rod"

10 lb 832 is a great choice if you have some lying around.

I'm hopeful to find something that can go lighter than 1/16 plus rubber if possible.  I'd like to get into that 1.5g territory but since this isn't a rod I'll fish more than a couple times a year I don't want to go crazy on it.

isn't that what we call bass rods?  Ultralight musky rods.

I second 10lb 832. I'm using 10lb Sufix nanobraid at the moment and it's been great. Haven't had a single break off. I think 832 would do just as well though

For me, the acid test was finding a BFS rod that could throw a 1/16th oz hair jig, and yet not completely fold around even light cover. The Dobyns BFS rod could throw the hair jig, but I wouldn't want to use it around even the lightest cover. It's not a "bass" BFS rod to me - more of a trout action. It seemed too light to throw a 1/5 oz Ned.

The ML Phenix Feather is almost exactly like my old Dobyns 702c. It can bring lures through light cover, but is too stiff to adequately throw a 1/16th oz hair jig. I use mine for heavier Neds (1/5 oz) and lighter Texas-rigs, or jig worms.

Sounds like the Goldilocks story, but the Phenix Feather "Light" is best I've found in the middle to do both tasks reasonably well. Sometimes I wished it would load slightly more when casting, but 90% of the time it works great. It can bring a Ned head through some light cover, but I wouldn't want to use it around much more cover than that.  A 7'2" to 7'4" version might be perfect to get additional casting distance, and so maybe next I try the Phenix BFS Classic BFS rod, but my concern it is too much like the Dobyns 740 that I returned.

Ended up going with an Old 18 Ascent that was rated 1/8-3/8. This was the 7' ML Mod Fast one. I've only had limited action with it but it seems to be what I'm looking for. I was actually using a Curado 70 MGL on it with 20lb braid and was getting 30 yard casts consistently with 5g, so it should fling even better with a proper BFS reel. So far, I'm a supporter of Old 18 rods for BFS sticks

Dobyns has introduced the Sierra Finesse series for BSF casting rod, several good choices?
