When it comes to rod power, do you think jdm made rods come in a bit underpowered for what they are rated for or pretty spot on? I heard people say a japanese heavy will probably be more like a medium heavy and a mh more like a medium etc. What are your thoughts? 

I don't think it's as much power that's lighter, but a case where the taper is softer.

Like when they use terms like regular fast lol. Is that basically a fast action as we know it? or softer?

I have a MH regular action casting rod from Daiwa that I would describe as true MH power with a moderate fast tip. Slower than fast action, but faster than a moderate action. I have come to like this action. I have another more affordable Daiwa rod that's MH-F, but has a similar action.

I'm looking at a jdm rod that is regular fast action and heavy power. I am thinking the H power is going to be more like MH lol. If the taper is forgiving enough it should allow me to fish a lot of different types of lures...that's my hope anyway. The rod I am wanting is not possible to get my hands on to check it out, it's only really sold in Japan so I have no way to try it out

Out of curiosity what is the exact rod your looking at and what is the Lure/line ratings? I find this to be a good general guide as the power rating. Not heard of regular fast action, only fast and regular. I am far from an expert though

It is a Gamakatsu casting rod...only recently did I discover the hook company we all know also makes quite a few rods in Japan. This thing apparently is rated to throw 3/8oz all the way up to 2oz lures which is interesting. Line recommended is 12-25 pound, but I will probably use 10 pound.

Interesting ... I saw a tacticlebassin YouTube video awhile back that talked about Gamakatsu rods and jdm actions in general. Based on the ratings it sounds like a true heavy power rod. Still no idea of regular fast vs fast vs regular action, but I am sure you could use Google translate to find some jdm reviews. Let us know what you find though and good luck to you.

Yeah, it only weighs 5 ounces apparently, that's pretty light for a rod rated heavy. I am nervous and excited at the same time, this would be my first high end jdm rod purchase...I have never dropped a lot of money on a rod before so. They are high quality rods so I'm not expecting to be disappointed 

Moderate fast tip is a good description for most Japanese rods.  

On average, they're going to have a softer tip and stouter butt for the same rating.  

They like a progressive bend in their taper, and don't like thick, heavy para tips.  

This also gives them a wider lure range.  

Works out well, because I like rods this way, also.

This rod is rated heavy...3/8 up to 2oz. Do you think I can get away with fishing lures in 1/4 weight without issues, or crankbaits being it has a softer taper?

@BassSteve - that's a good question - most JDM rods cast their low-end rating extremely well.  If it's a really high-modulus graphite, maybe not, medium modulus rod will very likely cast below it's low-end rating.

Apparently it is composed of 99% carbon fiber and 1% glass fiber so I'm not sure what this means function wise

Efreet?  I'd go up a power if this is the series you are looking at.  The 7'4" XH is used for jigs by a couple of TT peeps.

I don't know the rod, but I'd believe that a 1/4oz wouldn't load it properly for accurate casting, especially at that shorter length there probably isn't enough real estate in the tip.  But in a pinch if you wanted short pitches at that weight, you'd make it work.  Looks real interesting and would love to hear how you like it.  I'm a fan of jdm RF action.  You can do so much.

If I'm lucky that rod can handle 1/4 decently, the description says it's good for Texas rig also. I'm hoping it's more like a Mh than a true H

You sure your texas rig, weight, hook, and worm, are going to weigh less than 3/8oz?  I bet this rod excels as a big worm rod.

When I do Texas rig it usually weighs around that, if not a little bit heavier. I don't typically fish an 8 or 10 inch worm, I usually stick around a 5 or 6 inch worm. Another cool feature is the detachable handle, which apparently is common among jdm produced rods
