Shimano Stradic spinning reel - What size to purchase

Featured Replies

Hoping everyone had a happy holiday !

Tackle Warehouse has the Shimano Stradic FL spinning reel on it's Clearance Sale -- it had been at $179 on Clearence and now it is an additional 20% off of that price (so about $143). In the fall I bought a Stradic 2500HG as part of their wacky holiday sales set-up (essentially for the same price as it is on sale for now) because I was not sure the Stradic would be part of the Clearance Sale or if there would be any left once this Clearance Sale came along. To my surprise there are some left - so I might purchase a second one.

The one I purchased in the fall (2500HG)  was being targeting to be used on an EverGreen Combat Stick (7'1" MH/F - Line 8-17 - Lure 1/4 to 1oz) (that I purchased from @NorthernBasser). Since then I have purchased 2 more rods (St. Croix Mojo Bass - 6'10" ML/XF - Line 6-10 - Lure 1/8 to 1/2oz - from a BPS Sale) and a Diawa Rebellion - 7' - Heavy/Moderate - Line 14-25 - Lure 1/8 to 1oz - from a local guy who bought it several years go but never used it.

So given that these are three rods I will look to use next spring - what size Shimano Stradic would you suggest for me to purchase ? If I were to purchase two Stradics in this sale (not sure I can swing that) would you suggest I get 2 of the same size or of different sizes ?

Thank you in advance for you time and expertise.

Most bass fishermen are going to want medium frame reels to get medium-frame carbontex drag stack.

Pick between 2500 and 3000 for the line capacity you need.

I love the small frame reels with 7-lbs fiber drag in finesse niche (normally set drag at 1.5 to 2.5 lbs for 6- to 10-lb leader).

The large frame reels are really not needed away from salt.  I have a 5000 on kingfish rod, and like the weight balance with a 4000 on St. Croix Legend Glass.

If you like the Stradic  you bought, buy a couple more.  Spools will be interchangeable.

Do you need 200 yards of 6lb line, or 35 inches per crank speed? If not check out the jdm stradics.  I find their shallow spools to still hold plenty of line especially if you use braid, and the 28 inches per crank on the jdm reels is a better all around speed if you also throw any chuck n wind lures.

The difference between the Stradic FL and HG is gear ratio 5.1:1 vs 6.0:1 HG being faster.

The size 1000 may be a good choice for your ML rods, the FL is about IPT 25” and HG IPT about 30”.

well, no, FL denotes USM version of '19 model-change year.

While JDM sells 13 versions of this reel with different gear ratios and spool capacities from shallow to deep, the 5 versions exported to USM are all HG or XG gearing.

note same frame sizes interchange spools, small frame, medium frame, etc.

JDM spools can be swapped onto the correct frame, e.g. for using threadline braid on a medium-frame reel.

Either a 2500 or 3k are best IMO.  The difference is really just handle length and a slightly higher IPT with the 3k.  I like 3ks for T rigged/wacky rigged plastics or anything you're working the bait with the rod and 2500s for neds, swimbaits or anything you're working with the reel.  Honestly I like a slower gear ratio in the low 5s for the majority of FW reels, but Shimano USDM is all in on tournament bass ideology that a faster reel is better.

Thank you for your replies and information.

Based on the information each of you provided and a bit of additional research I am going to purchase the Stradic 3000XG. In researching it seems this FL model of the 3000XG comes with the carbon fiber drag - which seems a real positive from what I have read. I currently have a 2500HG from the previous sale so I figure I will give the 3000XG a try.

I will see how these work for me next spring/summer and if they are not meeting my needs I might (as @GetFishorDieTryin and @Bass Rutten have suggested) look in to a JDM version with a lower gear ratio. I am newer to fishing so I am still in the experimental phase of things.

Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge/expertise.

Look at the Shimano Stradic Specifications published by Shimano for everything from I P T, gear ratio’s, weight , line capacity etc.

ML and M spinning rods is all I know. Sub 7' ML rods, 1000 size reel. ML rods 7'+ 2500 size reels. All M rods 2500 size reels. Super simple. Never had a problem.
