No shad where I now fish , so looking to refine my frog colors where bluegill , perch ,  aquatic creatures , small reptiles and baby birds may be on the menu .

I use either a green/pepper (solid green with black spots) or black. Thats it

 

I tried them all over most of the SE and nothing gave me the most consistent strikes regardless of conditions

White works every where.  Black works everywhere.  Frog works everywhere.

 

They all kinda mimic perch and bugs regardless of the nitty gritty details.  The colors are more for different water clarity/light intensity to be honest.

I use Scum Frogs in green pepper or white.

Black, white here for the most part.  You have to look at the bottom. Fish can't see the top of the frog.

black, brown, and white (for a full moon night).  I throw the brown a lot because our water is crystal clear and in my head its a little more natural.  I doubt the fish care.

 

I do have a bluegill type pattern that I'll throw if its fairly open water, but if its fairly open water I'm less inclined to throw a frog.

Glad to see I’m not the only one on here who throws the Scum Frog.

The original is the only one I use now and have almost since they first came out.

I havent tried the original yet. Bought a Trophy Series and had some of the best frog fishing and hook up ratio ever using a frog that year and just kept buying them.

 

The body material and shape just work excellent. One of the few frogs I never have the hooks dig into weeds on a retrieve but has no problem hooking into fish. I fished hollow body frogs a lot in NY and always had mixed results, all those frogs sit in my tackle box now unused....should probably pull them from the box. 

The Launch is really good too.  The Trophy is the bomb and my most productive  frog that they make.  Something about how it's head bobs and spits makes fish go insane.  I haven't used a Scum Frog frog I didn't like.  The original and the mouse that they make both work extremely well for finicky fish and have light enough hooks you can throw them on spinning gear with light braid.

this, action is excellent. I toss it into the thickest stuff and just twitch it out getting it to spit water and they just engulf it.

Other than the original, the only other frog I use is the Trophy Series Popping Frog. 
 

The thing about them is that the “cup” is perfectly straight and not angled as the vast majority of the others on the market. 
 

The sound and water displacement of them are unique.

I was tempted to try the Trophy and Launch line but never did. 
The thing I like so much about the original is that I can make that thing walk in place with hardly any effort and no reason to adjust the hooks or tails. 
 

Plus, it will get bit when one with a bigger profile won’t or they are more finicky as you said. 

 

 

I think you should definitely consider bug-like baits. I'm definitely a convert after last year.

 

I started off with Deps Cover Scat (great bait! ) and went on from there. Have tried the IMO Kamushi 60, OSP Dice and most recently I'm enjoying Raid Japan 2Way.

 

All these baits get bit! 

 

I was very excited to see the Raid 1Way being on sale soon!! 

 

Here a little video of me testing the 2Way. It's no surprise these get bit!

This is how I pick colors for most of my topwaters. I have yet to find a color of hollow topwater frog that works better than others? Best frog for me overall is the GP/pearl Zoom Horny Toad.

I am generally a black, white, green person on frogs, but I have picked up a few JDM frogs lately that have more complex color patterns. They have been getting bitten pretty well even though it’s not really frog time around here. 

One important 'category' of color that I do think can play for any topwater lure, especially on high pressure fisheries, is transparent baitfish/color variations. Really good on sunny days in clearer water/fisheries where they've seen 1000 white and black and chartreuse frogs.

Black, White or Green.
