Step up from the SLX XT

Featured Replies

I need a new reel and have gift cards for Bass Pro so I’d like to keep it in the $200 range. I’m partial to Shimano so I’m thinking one of the Curado’s as I have an SLX XT. The question is which Curado is a step up from the SLX. All my reels are general purpose in my mind, the baitcasters being for heavier lures, spinner baits, jigs, and so forth in what ends up fairly heavy weeds. This will be used on a SC 6’6” MH Premier rod if it matters with either 20 or 30 lb braid.

fwiw, Bass Pro does not show the SLX XT so I couldn’t get another if I wanted too.

Bass pro gift cards aren’t accepted in Japan :)

I guess you can go curado 150 mgl…

150mgl is an excellent reel. If you’re tempted to throw a little lighter line, the 70mgl is also an excellent choice but don’t confuse the 70 with bfs, it is not a bfs reel.

The curado 70 is good little reel but the 150 sounds more appropriate for what you want to do.  Off topic suggestion; I find 30lb braid is about as low as I like to go on mgl spools.

Thanks all, now all I need is for Bass Pro to get in some mid speed, even TW shows an October date. Oh well, no hurry.

Same here. It’s all about the line diameter. I tried making my 70 do lower diameter and it can by a couple lbs. but I find the happy place with 12 floro or 30 braid for both the 150 and 70 mgl reels.

if you arent married to the ergonomics of the SLX and Curados, I would give the Lews Tournament Pro a shot. I was all Lews until I found out that the new Shimanos fit better in my hand. I would still only use Lews if their reels didnt get slightly wider.

You should try the slp platform. It's smaller.

After waiting since July to get a lefty Curado mgl 150 in the 7.4 speed Cabela’s finally got them in, and now so have I. Unfortunately, for me it’s too late in the year to try it out for real, I will go out first chance and try it from shore just for giggles.
