One of my absolute biggest fears. Nothing like bending down to rinse your fishy hands off the end of a dock at night and turning on your headlamp to see a 5” around spider 1’ from your face 🤮

Now that's a rarity. Usually I get lit up by the little ones. Got a fresh one on my pinky yesterday

Oh man we are loaded with giants up here in summer. Docks, concrete pilings and bridges, and anything wood. I grew up in a log house and it was festering with monsters. Nothing says trauma like being a little kid and lacing up your shoes in your lap and having a hairy spider the size of your hand come up out of your shoe lol. Yes, I have nightmares at 41 still 🤣

You must be putting off some bite me pheromones 🙃.

We spent a week at scout camp in wall tents with a good population of wolf spiders. I honestly don't recall anyone getting bit.

Mosquitoes avoid me, I hardly ever get bit by them. The spiders love me though. Combination of walking through tall grass and standing on one spot in the riprap too long. I do a lot of the spider equivalent of home invasions. They get caught in my pants hem and my sock/boot cuff more often than not. The one on my pinky got me while I was plugging in the bench grinder out in the shop

I don't come across that many giants, typically the ones I find in my socks or on my boots are about the size of a quarter

Danm bro that's rough

I really only see them when I go fishing in Maine sometimes, and more than once been stuck on the kayak with one - the first time I wasn't mentally prepared for that size of spider to be nonchalantly trying to be my buddy. I try to be very mindful of not panic slapping them to get them off me, just play it cool and guide them away.

I'm grateful I haven't been bitten and hope it stays that way

on the boat ramp ripraps there are probably a dozen within three feet of you at any given time. just gotta get comfortable with them. the majority of the time I don't get bit, but when I do it's usually many bites at once cause they're stuck in my pant leg or something. 99% it's a series of paired puncture scabs with some redness. my pinky is currently the 1%. That one must have been an invenomation or a mild secondary infection because it has been real mad

really not that bad. would rather deal with an unusual number of spider bites vs mosquito bites

I haven't done much night fishing the last few years, I'm hoping to change that this year, I really miss chasing those things that go bump in the night. One of our smaller kayak clubs is actually seriously discussing a night tournament this summer and several guys are wanting to do that, I really hope it happens.

I dress like I'm ready for a cold snap when its 90° out to avoid mosquito bites as much as possible, those thin fishing shirts with the hoods get bit right through. I'm either double layers I have a khaki jacket I wear that is woven too tight and a little too think for them to penetrate and reach me.

That much fabric in the summer would probably kill me lol

Mosquitoes don't really touch me unless I find my way into a swarm big enough to hear from a distance. Probably all the plastic in my blood

Same here. No chemicals. I even wear a wool beanie so they can't bite my scalp. They sting right through a baseball cap here.

This is in August

I overdress because of the temperature swings. It's amazing how much the humidity here will chill you overnight when it drops from the hight 90's to low 70's with extreme humidity so you're damp with the wind blowing on you. The bugs usually are only a problem for about the 30 minutes as the sun is going down to 30 minutes after it's dark. Lots of swarming bugs after dark though, especially anytime I have to turn my headlight on. I usually keep my facemask pulled up all the way all night to keep them from flying up my nose or in my ears. A buzzing bug slamming into your ear and going nuts is about enough to knock you out of the boat.
