For a minute there I almost forgot what forum I was on...

 

On a serious note I've sold a few rods on there and have run into some silly people so suspect it's entirely possible to have that happen with other people that are selling rods too. My personal favorite are the ones that try to lowball me within hours of me posting one and then telling me they have to meet up right away...at least wait a week before trying to pretend like you are William Shatner in a priceline ad...

FB marketplace is an absolute clown show of a circus.

Guys are selling "practically brand new, but used for 4 years" SLXs for $10 less than new.

And then ask me to sell my $200-400 rods and reels to them for $50-100, used once or with tags still on them....

 

One time selling a lawn mower a guy offered to trade me a goat.

 

And for the car side of it, its even worse.... Old Japanese performance cars that were never worth much and were mass produced are being sold for $30-40k or more, but locally can be bought from used dealers for $10-15k.... And when you ask them about it they say a few stickers and a aftermarket exhaust make it super rare.... It was once a great platform for buying and selling, but now is a disaster.

And the people are really interesting.

FB is a cesspool. I've sold there, but it has always been fairly high ticket items and I don't entertain clowns. 

I’ve had some great success on FB Marketplace and have met some really great people selling fishing gear, truck accessories, and high-end guitars.

 

Of course, I get the wackos as well. I love the extreme low ballers who think they are doing you a favor. If you write, “No trades accepted” it’s a guarantee someone will want to trade you their Walmart Lews combo for your high end JDM gear…..oh plus $20 in cash to “sweeten the deal”.

 

Had one guy take something at asking price, arranged a meet up, then messages me on the way to meet if I would accept him taking the item that day, then meeting up “in a few weeks” to give me the cash. Yeah, no.

 

You can usually filter the crazies out just by their opening messages. There’s an art to negotiation and low-balling is not one of them folks!  If you low ball, my price is firm. If you offer with a somewhat reasonable number, I’m more than willing to negotiate a number that work for both of us.

Sold my old boat, Accord, and Silverado via FB marketplace...

 

All three were sold relatively quickly, buyers had cash-in-hand.

 

 

I've tried selling smaller items -- microwave, bunk-beds, snow-blower. No takers.

I've sold off lot of my new reel collection off on Facebook and occasionally get some clowns, but I have had good success so far. I do get some low ballers and when they give me a stupid number, I just reply with one word. No 

I have my best results selling fishing stuff right here.  I've NEVER had a bad interaction or transaction.  I would wager being a mod here for 13 years probably chased the tire kickers away, but I think it's a pretty decent way to unload stuff or get stuff at a better price.

I once sold a rare 19th century collectible on FB Marketplace. $500, but it was worth much, much more. I specifically chose the option to sell locally, either pick up or meet up. In the Indianapolis metro area, this was perfectly feasible. And it did sell locally after a couple of weeks to a nice guy who chose to pick up from my home. But I got countless people messaging me, wanting it for $50 or less AND wanting me to ship it to them across the country on my dime. Absolute clowns.

So do you have a Goat now or still have the lawnmower?   Both will achieve the same goal.
