SpunkShad and A-Rig?

Featured Replies

Yes or no? I don’t see why it wouldn’t work?

Tactical Bassin recommends using them on A-Rigs along with other baits, and they've never steered me wrong.

Personally I've have never used them, but if you're looking for a more sneaky/finesse type rig, a Spunk Shad would be a great fit.

On almost everything else I prefer a straight tail or subtle tail, but on A-Rigs I go with paddle tails.   I need to experiment more with different baits, but I hate throwing the A-Rig when the fish aren't biting it, such a chore and pita.

What rod are you using? This is one topic I disagree with TB on. MH ain't the way to fly IMO. I like an XH flippin stick or a similarly powered swim bait rod in the 8' range much better. A long stout rod takes a lot of work out of it, and does a good job of driving hooks home at long distance.

I use an Alpha Angler Wide Glide that's 7'9 XH with a moderate tip.   I've never had problems landing or hooking fish with it, I just find the A-Rig to be nuance in general.     When it works, it's fun though 😁

Haven't tried it but seems like it would. My rule of thumb is they put 'shad' in the name so I use it when I'm imitating...a shad. Normally that's been shad colored chatterbaits and spinnerbaits and I never thought of using them on an a-rig but seems like the smaller size options would work.

I'm still trying to figure out if an a-rig would work with forward facing sonar since everyone on youtube says I can only throw specialized minnow baits with it and only ones with no paddle tail and if I do anything else the fish will never bite anything I throw at them again.

^ Just kidding I don't own forward facing sonar but after this week it seems like I might be getting close to the 'never bite anything I throw at them again' accomplishment...

I would stick to the paddle tails.

No. Not cause it won't work, but because it doesn't really add anything. Situationally, a do nothing or do little approach might work as well or maybe even better than with baits with more action, but that will be the exception rather than the rule. That being said, replacing just the business end bait, or matching straight tails with umbrellas wearing blades could be the ticket. I find matching the size and action of the paddle tails is where the ROI is going to be best.
