Bullet Weight for Drop Shot

Featured Replies

So I can use bullet weights to make a drop shot rig in a pinch, would you guys recommend putting a split shot on the bottom for better bottom contact and maybe less snagging

I've used steel bullet weights and they work fine. No lead in NY. I haven't tried split shots but it's a weight so it should work.

I'd think a bullet weight and a couple bobber stops would do the trick in a pinch. I'd definitely put the fatter end down.

I have absolutely used bullet weights in a pinch when I have ran out of d-shot weights. The bobber stop idea is great. It makes it adjustable just like a propper d-shot weight.

Take a piece of wire and make a 2” stem with a twist at the top.  Now add any threaded weight you want.  I did that forever and still do.  If you’re going to use bullet weights, use two weights half the size and put them both wide end to the middle so you make a diamond weight.

When I first tried drop shot using a bullet weight and a small spilt shot to hold it to end on the line was all we had and worked OK. Someone came up with weight that swiveled to reduce line twist and crimped the weight attachment to hold the weight on the end of the line. No turning back this  design is all I have used for decades.

I just tied a weak knot on the bullet weight and let er rip. If it hangs up, you only lose the bullet. But I don't care much for a dropshot and don't want to invest in it.

For impromptu dropshotting, I tie my bullet weights on with a clinch knot, fat side down. Works just fine.

I lightly pinch the bullet weight to the line so it slides off if stuck.

I've tried a bullet weight and didn't care for it. It was no different than a regular drop shot weight when it comes to snagging. For sensitivity, I like a tungsten cylinder weight 1/8 for shallow water, 3/16 is really my go to, and 1/4 for deeper water. I have tried 3/8 and didn't seem to be much different than 3/8.  I use the drop shot cheat hooks with the a swivel and I pre-tie all my weights.

I just use a split shot.  I used to tie a figure 8 knot under it but I just crimp it on without a knot now.

If it gets hung up I only lose the split shot.
