Daiwa 24 Steez SV TW: Vibration During Retrieve

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone experienced this same issue with the 24 Steez SV. There’s a slight vibration that can be felt, and is slightly audible, when I retrieve very fast and when I slow down that same retrieve. I will say, I only feel this when I’m cleaning my reel and I’ve taped the line down and test out the retrieve; I do not feel it when I have a bait tied on and I’m out fishing. I switched the spool from that one to another of the same reel and the vibration went away and followed along with that spool. Does this mean it’s a spool bearing issue, or could it be a drive/pinion gear issue?

Thanks to everyone in advance for any help and feedback.

Sounds like a spool bearing issue.  Add some oil or if it is just slop in the bearing then replace or ignore it if it is a non issue when using the reel.

I would guess it's required freeplay is the level wind, when it's not being loaded by line through the LW rider.

To me, sounds like one of those don't do that things.

So you did a spool swap and the problem went away? I’m not a Daiwa expert by no means but logically speaking that spool has an issue. Either that spool bearing possibly or the brake rotor.. I call it a rotor Daiwa calls it something else. Is it a SV boost spool?

I have the same reel. It felt weird when I got it. It made a little noise but nothing crazy. Casting was also underwhelming.  I thought about sending it out but I really couldn't find anything wrong with it. Then the Captain Obvious light went off in my head.... I used the supplied wrench and loosened the zero adjuster just a fuzz and problem solved. Feels awesome now.

Ok,... So this is a weird question, but I have had it happen to me and it made we worry something was wrong until I realized what it was...

You said it only happens when cleaning and you have the line taped down. Is it possible to you have a bit of the tape or the tag end of the line extending out when you spin or reel the spool and it is clicking on the frame??

Can you really adjust it? I’m 99% sure the tool is just to take it apart. Can anyone confirm?

Theres a thread on another site that talks about it but I’m not sure if linking to it would break any rules.

I loosen my " zero adjust" spools. I like a bit more free play in the spool. I have a well trained thumb lol!

I only turned mine about 1/32" to 1/16", just a fuzz, and the reel loosened up a little, it felt smoother and casting was way better.  It was almost as if it was over tightened from the factory. I really haven't had any over runs or backlashes either.

I'm using 15lb Tatsu. I probably should have used 12lb but so far its been great. I've thrown jerkbaits and a Pop Max but I mainly have been using it for the free rig. Everything I have fished on it has been around a 1/2oz.

The zero adjuster on the 24 Steez does not connect to a pin that travels through a hole in the pinion to ultimately press against the spool shaft.

So in that regard, the zero adjuster has zero effect on spool tension.

Having said that, I could see where over tightening on the cap could ‘squeeze’ the pinion in some capacity. Albeit very small.

With enough effort one can get noises, vibrations and all kinds of symptoms from an otherwise fine reel. Any kind of use or motion outside of regular intended use doesn’t mean anything. Fish your reel and enjoy it.

Mine does the same thing when i reel in a little fast with more resistance rig/baits. I always thought it was the spool rattling since there's no pinion shaft and spool sits kinda loose in mine. I changed the palming plate bearing to a zpi bearing and it eliminated some of side to side play and feels a little better. Super annoying

I get what you are saying and read the same thing before I purchased it. I also read and watched whatever video I could before purchasing it. Some thought this reel was the best reel Daiwa has made, others thought it was just Ok and kind of a let down especially at the price.

When I first fished it, I kind of experienced what others had mentioned above. For me it was a little noise, it didn't feel as smooth as I had hoped and the casting distance was similar or less than the previous Steez SV but it still felt pretty awesome otherwise.  I thought it might just needed to be fished and it would work itself out but no such luck.

So I read a post on another forum that said to try loosening the "Oil Cap". I thought, what is the Oil Cap? And I found what he was referring to in the instructions.

When I adjust it with the supplied tool, it loosens the spool but it does not effect the rate of fall of a lure when the clutch is engaged. Oddly, it does effect the play in the spool but not much.  Engineering wizardry maybe? All I know is that it was tight,  I loosened it a fuzz and the reel is amazing now. Also, if I tighten it, the issues come back.

@Delaware Valley Tackle do you have any experience with the 24 steez sv? As far as I’m aware, you can’t adjust spool tension. The tool is just to loosen/tighten the cap. Have you ever worked on one?

I’m certainly not saying you’re wrong.

And I do agree that there could be some secondary effects of tightening/loosening the cap on the spool.

I have taken down several of these reels to individual parts. It’s definitely different than most other Daiwa’s these days in several ways.

I don't think it acts like a spool tension knob or the previous "zero adjuster" but it does do something to the spool. I am not sure what but it does make a difference.

I took it out tonight with the tool and adjusted it in small increments in both directions. It seems to have a sweet spot on my reel. I marked it with painters tape and a sharpie before I left so I would know where it was to start. It only took a small fuzz of an adjustment to get it too tight and for it to then be out of sorts. It did nothing different going the other direction when loosened past the mark I made on the tape but it functioned fine and was a pleasure to fish.

Any topwater bait that doesn't sit still a long time, I am fishing it on fluorocarbon.  It's just what I have confidence in. I do use mono from time to time if I am going to use both frogs and big pencil baits, like a Showerblows or if I am really wanting to bomb cast a bait. If it's just frogs, I am using straight braid.

My favorite is to throw a Baby Pop X on 5lb FC. It's a challenge but once I get the pace of the lure dialed in, I will kill them on this bait.
