New reels

Featured Replies

Been fishing swimbaits for the last several years but going to start mixing in some conventional.
Looking to pick up 2 reels one for a Fury 734c and one for a Fury 765 flip. I would prefer both reels to be the same in a 7 or maybe 8 speed.  What are some newer reels i should consider if you were wanting to put the same exact reel on both rods ?

Budget about the same as the rods?

As Tom said, a budget would help narrow the field.  However, in each price range there will be several good options.  Any brand preference?

These are some sticks i just had laying around so using them until they bite the dust.  Budget wise let’s say 300 or less. I’m not to brand specific any of the major ones are fine. Liked the curado K’s i use to run. But figured I’d try something new. Seen the M and that might be a consideration.  but was just curios of what else is out there that might have came out in the last year. Or maybe just released.

If that's $300 total for both reels, check out the Daiwa Fuego CT, Shimano SLX XT A 150, Okuma Hakai, Lew's Speed Spool Gen 3, Lew's Tournament MP LFS, or Lew's KVD LFS.

There are cheaper if you want to keep it around $200 total for both.

What swimbaits are you going to be throwing?

Daiwa Zillion 100 SV TW HD (JDM) has a deeper spool with your budget from Digitica

Tom

What sort of baits are you looking to throw on the 734? Normally I'd say a tatula 150 for the 765 flip but that might be a bit overkill for the other rod. The curado 200 series is the other one I'd consider and I have that on a 766 flip at the moment. It's a little bigger than an average reel but not by much and the tatula weighs a bit more but holds more line.

On the other hand if you are going to throw 1/2-1oz baits I'd probably just throw a tatula 100 on both and call it a day.

None on these setups. i have been throwing big swimbaits since 2018. Now I’m looking to mix in some conventional once again. So I’m just curious what’s new and what yall would recommend reel wise for those two sticks.

I’m planning on using the magnum rage bug and say 3/8- 1oz weights on the 765.
the 734c is just going to be a general all around rod on that i  throw spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, weightless senkos, & flukes, small crank baits. Keitech paddle tails. Sprinker frogs chappo’s
I Was looking at the new Tatula sv tw100 today at bass pro and it seemed petty nice thinking i might pair it with the 734c. Not sure about the reel for 765 flip

In your price range, and looking for something a little different from shimano, go jdm zillion or zillion hd. Especially if you are considering domestic daiwa reels. Go with the HD on the flip.

At the jdm price, the Zillion is still among the best bang-for-your-buck reels out there.

I actually like the regular tatulas over the sv tw models for most use cases, but if you are looking at flipping and pitching a rage bug then the sv tw 150 might help a bit on the bigger rod and that's actually what I'd get if I was getting a new pitching / flipping rod. For the other one I'd personally just get a tatula 100. You could probably go with something a little nicer with that budget as some have suggested, but I personally don't have any experience with casting reels beyond that price point so those are the ones I'd get. I also happen to really like those reels so even if I had a bigger budget I'd probably opt for a more expensive rod and stick w/ those reels. Good luck and hope you end up liking whatever you land on.

$300 per reel opens up the options a lot.  I hesitate to make any suggestions on new reels in that price range as I've pummeled the Bait Monkey into submission.  Many on here praise the JDM Zillion as being a fantastic reel.  It and the Okuma Hakai were my last two reel purchases.  Tried them once...on the same day.  Same lure but different lines and different rods, so not an apples to apples comparison.  Best I could tell on water, casting distance was the same.  TT's review said the Hakai was a good distance caster.

The 70 and 80 size reels are quite popular, but if it were me using only two rods, I'd want reels holding more line.  Some lures can be zinged out there quite a long way.  I'm not fond of seeing the spool arbor on long casts.  Might stroke some egos, but not mine.  Enjoy using my Salamandura 70, but was almost spooling it on every cast with a lipless crankbait on a 6'10" MH-MF.  Will be putting it on a ML with light line.

Skipping or light baits = Daiwa SV (Tatula, Zillion, Steez... mild to wild)

Chuck and wind presentations = Shimano Curado

If I could only fish one reel on all my rods, it would be a Tatula or Zillion SV in a 7.1 speed.

2022 Zillion TW HD is the answer. This is one of the greatest bass reels ever made, and quite possibly the greatest baitcaster of all time, depending on who you ask.
Deeper spool, casts a country mile, 100mm handle and brass gearing. It’s the perfect reel for you.

$290.05 shipped to your door in 4 days from Digitaka.

At that price the answer is either a Met or a Zillion.  Both can be had in JDM form for $250 or so.  Both are excellent reels.  Most people have a preference between daiwa and shimano based on form factor so choose accordingly.  I have a couple of both and there isn’t a wrong choice.

1 Zillion HD

1 Zillion SV

Both JDM
