Free rig or a drop shot?

Featured Replies

Which one in your opinion is the better set up? If being fished in the same area ?

I know @gim will disagree with me on principle - but I've had better luck with Drop-Shot over Free-Rig.

I've never even used a free rig.

I've used a DS many times before.  I just don't care for it.

Free rig all day for me but they seem to compliment each other. You can pick either one and catch fish. I like the Free Rig in tight spots and a drop shot running parallel to the bank and in open water.

The downside to fishing a drop shot is that its slower and gets hung up more.

I will only drip **** if I have to… will start Free Rig first because I think it catches bigger fish overall.

Very different presentations. Free rig is close relative to the Bullet weight Texas rig.

In the shallows, I will throw a free rig first normally then switch to dropshot if I’m getting short strikes. During the early spring, I love dropping a Bubba shot into the brush.

In 20 feet or deeper, it’s straight up dropshot.

Free Rig is far more versatile.

But these are quite different presentations.

This has been Hot Girl Drop Shot Summer. This week I've been power shotting 6" Robos on straight 50 lb.

Good results. Flying through Roboworms though.

The Free Rig is going to come back into rotation more when the grass dies down a bit.

They're different tools in the box. It's also difficult to Free Rig a 4" curly tail worm.
