It should only be 15% added for Japan. The tariffs remain in place through October 14th while the case gets appealed to the Supreme Court.

Now let’s get off politics or Glenn will lock this.

Why are you trying to make a discussion about how tariffs are affecting tackle purchases into something it’s not?

maybe we start seeing fishing gear at the airport Duty-Free stores.  stop in, buy a bottle of booze, a carton of smokes,...and a fishing rod.

What? The post right before mine was talking about a federal judge ruling. I wanted to make sure he was correctly informed.

It’s pretty much routine to go to the courts to challenge a law’s constitutionality.  Reporting on where it stands, whether accurate or not, is not by itself political.  You may believe it is and that is your privilege.  But for most, it is a discussion of costs and the hope that there may be relief.

Geeze...can you see why I ban politics?  Just mentioning the word.....

Get this topic back on track. Or...

I ordered a reel from JLS on either 8/30 or 8/31. No mention on the JLS side when the purchase went through and it's being sent "registered airmail". I guess at this point, I am along for the ride. I will report back here on my experience. . . . if the thread isn't locked by then.

Plat could not tell me for sure how much a new side plate for a Tatula reel would cost by the time I received it. No time frame on delivery either.

Mike's reel repair in Canada was about the same. They have guidelines that are similar to what was posted previously but also cautioned that those were only guidelines and that the shipping company might have different ideas.

While the tariffs triggered this, the bigger problem seems to be the delivery agents (also mentioned earlier in this thread) and how they can basically do whatever they want as far as fees and time lines for delivery. Plat and Mike's both made it very clear that the customs broker/delivery agent were the unknown and that they as sellers were trying to find ways to ensure U.S. customers could still be taken care of for a reasonable cost and time frame.

My order came from plat , I gave them a heads up on what I was charged and they asked me to look into what happened,I spoke to a woman and customer service at DHL and she told me I have to wait until the package is delivered before I could dispute the fee so it will post back with what I find.

I'd definitely be prepared to pay more.

I think every order I've had with them has used FedEx btw.

Technically, when the seller creates the shipping label they can pay for the tariff but I highly doubt many companies will do this.

Expect an invoice for the tariff. 15%.

7.5~15% is actually not that bad. Buyee is charging 20% now. My buddy just scored a mint-conditioned Steez CT SV for $250, but Buyee charged him extra $50 + shipping. Still, now bad for a MSRP $600+ reel.

I can't see any company eating the tariffs since it would put them in the red. Consumer manufacturing only sees a net profit margin of 3%-8% - eating a 15% tariff would soon put them out of business.

Which is why this will be so devastating to small businesses. A large company can absorb or spread out incurred costs, take out necessary loans, or shift around other aspects of the business. Small stores do not have that luxury. A single down year can torch those places.

I would avoid DHL at all costs, in fact I’ve sent Emails to Jun and asked him specifically to mail out FedEx and he was fine with that. They are the worst out of all carriers. It took exactly two items from Japan, one a camera and the other from Asian Portal to understand how terrible they are and this was way before tariffs.. just my experience but I hear rumbling about them all the time..

From what I have read, JLS uses the "PPU" model, which is where the shipper will not pay customs to release the package until the customer pays the duties, and possibly an additional fee on top of that. I think this could be viewed as a 'stupid tax' on me for not being aware that this was coming. The timing was unfortunate since had I made the purchase a couple days earlier, this would not have been the case.

With that said, this was for a reel with a shallow spool, that simply isn't offered in the USDM. And it will still be less than a somewhat comparable reel if I was willing to accept a spinning reel with a deep spool (I'm not).

I have since learned that if I ordered from another popular JDM seller that has offered to go halfsies on the tariff and ships for free, I would have paid a couple dollars less overall at a minimum, and if the shipper charges an extra fee on top if the tariff, it will only get more expensive for me.

So as far as I'm concerned, I am still getting a little bit of a bargain. Would I take the same deal again if I were in the market for another spinning reel? Yes, but I would not be as excited about the deal.

If I know how much something will cost upfront, I don't mind paying more if getting it from outside the US is the best (and sometimes only) way.  It just stinks that the delivery agents/customs brokers can kinda do whatever they want.  Plat and Mike's have been good suppliers and I intend to keep using them but I might hold off until some of this settles down.  I'm just not interested in making a $35 USD order and it end up costing me over $100 and waiting 3 months to get it.  I think if UPS/FedEx/DHL could give some clear costs and timelines it would really help everyone out.

It appears that my new reel is going to ship via FedEx.  simple Google search returns this regarding what FedEx will be charging:

"If FedEx pays the duties and taxes to customs on your behalf, you will be charged a Disbursement Fee, which is the greater of $4.50 or 2% of the duty and tax."

So, I estimate it will cost me an extra $4.50 on top of the actual tariff. If that is accurate, I still consider it a relatively good deal, and I get the reel I want with the features that are important to me.

I also ordered some lures that, even if I can find them domestically, would still be significantly more costly.

Keeping my fingers crossed and I won't know until the transactions are complete and I have the merch in hand.

Just an FYI: that other dealer that's giving you half-off the tariff....every order I've placed with them came Fed-Ex.

I recently ordered a few items from Canada - the shop said they will be using UPS expedited shipping - I am wondering if I will get an email bill from UPS (for duty/taxes) ? Or will I have to be home when they deliver and pay at that time (That would seem silly) ? - I will see what happens and let you know - For now I am holding off on a few JDM items that I have been considering purchasing

I just did the same. When I placed my ordered (transmission lines) I didn't realize it was from Canada. They are supposed to be shipped Next Day UPS. There was no mention of any additional fees. Tracking says I should be getting the order tomorrow. Guess I'll find out then. Hope I'm not on the hook for more coin.

The other dealer will have also pre-paid the tariff so FedEx will have no reason to charge a processing fee. Best I can tell and if my math is mathing correctly, my "stupid tax" will amount to less than $10  compared to the other seller that eats half of the tariff since the base price of the reel was around $20 less to begin with.

I hear ya.

Let us know how things come out for you.

I live in Canada and I've ordered from the states in the past  and here how it goes.

For an order of around 60$ US, you have to pay shipping and that is about 15$.

So a total of 75$ with the exchange comes to about a hundred dollars Cdn.

Shipped by UPS ( try to avoid that ) there is another 20 to 25 dollars for duty and a 10 dollars for handling.  Then some sales tax are added to that (15%). You can pay when they get to your door or they send you an email with the amount due and you can pay on line.

I've got to really need something to buy that way.

@Reel - thank you for that info - I will update when I find out more info. for the items I purchased - ugh, I wish I could have avoid UPS now that I read your post, but it was the shop that said they "now ship UPS Expedited" - my purchases were right at $100 US - hopefully I don't get dinged too badly !

Is that good or bad?

Good - always had the item in hand within 3-4 business days of ordering....and it coming from Japan to Minnesota.

My parts arrived from Canada without any additional fees. I probably paid up front. It's water under the bridge now.
