  • Guys, I've been hunting for 15 years. Shot a lot of does, but I've always said I wasn't going to shoot a buck until it was one I would be proud to put on the wall. Well, last night it finally happened

  • Although seeing 3-5 deer per sit, I have been waiting for one of these two, to show up but this one did the other morning so I decided to tag it. I still have another buck tag so we shall see.

  • One of my co-workers got this yesterday just north of Madison, WI.  He is having a shoulder mount done.

I posted an update last week in another thread about that.  For the sake of keeping this one on track, I'll refer to that one.  But thanks for checking.

I got very fortunate the last few years and have connected with a family of crop farmers whose land is inundated with deer. This year has been our best yet. I harvested 7 does in a 1 week period in September, all in soybean fields. Haven't been out with the bow yet since my meat needs are met, but the rut is coming soon here in upstate NY and I'll get out to try to find some antlers.

How are you able to harvest 7 anterless deer but still haven't used a bow?  You must have a really early gun season.

Crop damage permits that farmers can get. My son harvested one last year mid August. The farmer had 20 tags. They get into those beans and can’t stop themselves from destroying them in no time flat.

Got out for first time this season Sunday had two small bucks come in let em both walk. The one was borderline shooter but we’re trying to let em grow it’s just tough when the next property over is Amish and they blast everything that moves.

I could go for a deer ham grilled extra rare right about now…..

My buddies gave me some shoulder once and I was about to cook it like I always do backstrap but a lady my wife works with from upstate NY said no no no no, the shoulder is tough and needs a different cooking method

she said put it in the crock pot with a whole bottle of wine, some carrots, potatoes and onions and eat it when you get home from work. Holy smokes!!! That was amazing

Which tyoe?

Red: Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Red Zinfandel, Grenache - something else?

White: Chenin Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay - other?

Come on man - can't just say "Wine" - there's so many varieties and it does make a difference

And lets not forget the Blush wines either.

The season starts here in 8 days.

Weather looks decent, for now. That will likely change. I plan to go every day, all day, as long as the conditions allow it. High winds, heavy rain, and extreme warmth keep me at home. Anything else is tolerable.

I don’t recall, think it was red. Definitely cheap cuz it was for cooking (and I bought it so that always means cheap)

We’ve been seeing quite a few little bucks on the trail camera this year. That is, until this guy showed himself. Hopefully, he doesn’t stay nocturnal which they seem to do the past couple years.

Oh I know you do! Back when I was a teenager and real heavy into hunting I’d watch all the hunting shows and a ton would be in Iowa. I made four trips to NW Nebraska. There are some monsters there too.

Day 1 of 9 starts tomorrow!

Buck Fever is real.  I can feel it.

A drop in temperature is expected for a few days here.  That should help with daytime deer movement.  The high on Monday morning says 17 degrees where I will be hunting.

I saw 2 deer today.  They were both small bucks.  A spike around 8:30am and a fork at 5:10pm.

Tomorrow looks pretty raw.  NW 15-25 and temps in the low 30's.  Not ideal.

Sat this morning and this afternoon had deer both sits. This morning had a big doe come in to 10 yards was head on the entire time no shot. Something spooked her she turned and bounded into the thicket stopped and walked away never offering a shot.

this afternoon had another doe little smaller at 30 yards broad side naked eye at first I thought button buck especially since it was alone and on small side. Looked at its head good with the scope on the cross bow. Realized it wasn’t a button buck decided to let one fly and moved from looking at its head to its vitals and it turned and ran away like the one did this morning.

80% chance frozen mix tomorrow but I’m still gonna go out it will be a miserable sit but hopefully they will be moving with the weather.

I saw 8 deer today, 7 antlerless and one pretty decent 8 point buck.

I am holding out for Mr Big for now.  As the season wears on I might lower my standards.

@gim do you ever try rattle antlers, doe pee, mock scrapes?

I’ve tried rattling a few times with no luck. I did bad a nice 9 point one year after making a mock scrape.

Just wondering if anyone has success with bringing in deer besides just waiting.
