Speed worm vs mag speed worm

Featured Replies

I had a lot of success this year on the zoom speedworms. But I was curious do most of you prefer the magnapeed worms over the regular? I see them talked about a lot more.

The Magnum and 1 other are the only 2 permanently rigged plastics that I use every outing regardless of when and where I go.

I don’t like the regular size as they seem to roll when rigged unpegged.
When I want/need to down size I use a Rage Cut R instead

I like the magnum because it is better with heavier hooks and I can throw it weightless on a bait caster with heavy line.  It is a better top water than the regular size and it works better when I bite it down and re rig it after a fish than the smaller one.  Also it has caught me piles of fish over 6 lbs including an 11 lber this year lol

The magnum size still catches me tons of dinks and nice 2-4 lbers but it definitely has a giant attracting quality regardless of how you rig it.

Regular on a shaky head.. never fails

I like using both sizes, each have their time & place. 20 yrs ago or so, the smaller one was the only one available.

We used to Texas rig the smaller speed worm with a 1/16 - 1/8 oz weight and burn it on surface around grass & lily pads. Made a great finesse topwater that still caught big ones. Could also pause it & let it sink in gaps. Years later I found it makes a great shakey head bait as already mentioned.

The magnum is a great bait too. Works awesome when rigged weightless as a subtle buzzbait which you can throw easily on a baitcaster. Also can let it slow sink around gaps in grass or lily pads. Works great Texas rigged as well.

I keep both sizes in my tackle bag. Along with a good ole super fluke, the ultra vibe speed worms are Zoom best baits.

I hate Zoom discontinued their floating foam frog. I love it too. ☹️

Sounds like I need to put some on my next order. I assume the usual colors apply…. Green pumpkin, junebug, watermelon and a variation of red?

yeah the green pumpkin and redbug are my best colors but I also like the watermelon seed/red/candy variations and the June bug and black!

Pick the color based on your waters clarity, light condition and in some cases forage.
You’ll save yourself a lot of time, money and aggravation than just arbitrarily picking a few.

Personally

I only use Junebug for the Speed Worm and honey candy for the Cut R when a smaller profile or for changes in conditions warrant.

For more subtle swimming worms like a ribbon tail I only use red/shad.

What is the other plastic you have permanently rigged up?

  • Super User

Never fished a speed worm, looks like would be a good night fishing worm that moves a lot of water.

A bottom contact bug of some sort
Always start with a Rage Bug and go from there.

This is how it always starts.  I am happy with the lures I have, then other people tell the Monkey how great another lure is.  I decide it wouldn't hurt to try just one, and I'm on the road to the poor house.

I use Zoom Ole monsters, and Zoom Mag Trick worms every time I fish for bass.  I catch many quality bass on those two worms, and have enough to qualify to be on the hoarders reality show.  I am lucky this thread came out after I made my last order or the Monkey would have forced me to try a pack of Magnum speed worms.

I'm positive I would catch a giant bass on the first day trying a Magnum speed worm.  Then the Monkey wouldn't even have to encourage me.  I would stock up on a truck load all by myself.  This wouldn't be a problem except for what would I do with my life time supply of other Zoom worms.  I'm sure they would still work, and I would have to bring a few pounds along with me every time I go fishing, but they would never get wet.  I would be hooked on the new greatest thing, and my old favorites would just take up space in my kayak.  Eventually I would permanently store them in a giant box with my other  lures that were replaced.  The sad thing is I wouldn't ever know if the bass cared.  They would probably still like the old worms as much or more than the new ones, but I would never know.

Please just once when someone asks about a lure, somebody post something like it is a great lure, but not any better than many other similar lures most people already have.

Is the speed worm way better than an Ole Monster or Magnum Trick Worm?  If they are please don't tell the Bait Monkey.  I have already spent this years Christmas allowance.

I think they are more of a regional deal. I was recently at stick marsh and the BPS there had a load of them as do all the tackle shops in Florida. I've seen guys burn them down there or fish them with a steady retrieve.

Here in the Ozarks where we drag worms I have never seen them make any difference over say a ribbon tail or a Finesse/ mag. finesse.

I have heard it said that it’s a “Florida bait” but also I catch fish everywhere with them and the water is very clear and it’s day time and I’m halfway in between Canada and Florida…. It’s a bait that gets bites!

I haven’t found color to matter too much with worms but redbug and green pumpkin always seem to get bigger fish when I happen to be throwing them - but any of the watermelon or green pumpkin speed worms can be doctored with spike it markers to look more like something in the water they’re eating.

i think the long slender profile with the subtle visual cue of the tail randomly flickering is pretty hard to resist for a bass in any region.

I’ll 2nd what @Pat Brown said. They are def not just a FL bait. I live in MS and mostly fish in MS & TN, but I’ve also had success with the speed worms in GA & AL, as well as FL.

They just work great around vegetation, which is mostly what I fish. But I can t rig one and catch em around wood/tree tops too. I don’t think I hardly ever use ribbon tail worms anymore.

P.S. I’m a big fan of Watermelon Candy or Green Pumpkin for clear water, Junebug or similar for stained water.

Agree with @wdp I like both sizes and the size I'll choose depends on the situation. For example the smaller sizes do well in ponds for me and I actually caught one of the biggest fish of my life on a regular size ultravibe earlier this year. I usually like the larger size for bigger bodies of water when I'm using it as a search bait or if the visibility is lower or I think they might go for a larger size bait or just want to try and focus on hooking larger fish. I'm also not in Florida so definitely not just a Florida only bait.

For worms I like the zoom ultravibe but I'm also trying out the big bite baits tour swim worm. For colors I like junebug red or redbug (zoom) and for the tour swim worm they also have a color called purpletoma that I just bought but haven't had a chance to try out yet. For weights I'll typically go with 3/16 on the smaller one and 5/16 with the bigger one. For hooks I've really been liking the gamakatsu g-finesse hybrid lately and will go with a 4/0 for the smaller one or a 6/0 for the bigger one.

^ I hear ya man this last month got expensive for me (even with amazon haul showing up) but I'm also looking forward to all the new stuff I've got to try out and should also be good on buying lures for a while (I think that might be the saying that comes next).

I absolutely love them. Very versatile. Burn a mag uv speed worm along the surface, swim it through vegetation, drag it on the bottom etc etc.
