Go to Underspin?

Featured Replies

What’s your favorite Underspin jighead? Ive tried a few but none have jumped out at me yet. I’m looking for 1/2oz and a hook to pair with a 4.5-5.5 swimbait.

My underspin success is mostly finesse swimmers, 2.5-3.5." The northland tackle smeltinator in 3/8-1/2oz 2/0-3/0 has done well for me.  The 5/0 version might be worth checking out.

I only use the 6/0 nickel plated Gambler Duz It on a Skinny Dipper or Big EZ swim bait.

Do you superglue on the swimbaits? I’ve seen those but always wondered about the keeper.

I do use the loctite gel on most jigheads, but often forget to replenish it.  The cone keepers are pretty effective as is though, I don't hate em.  They also work well with TPE, which is nice because a mooch minnow on an underspin is really good in cold water.

Another vote for the Northland Smeltinator but 1/4 oz 2/0 with a 3" Crush City Mayor.  Superglue helps (Loctite control gel).  I had previously used the Dirty Jigs TB mini underspin but something changed about a year ago and hookup ratio went waaaay down.  I read they changed the hooks possibly.  Switched to the smeltinator underspin with the gamakatsu hooks and I was back in business.

I've not tried the larger underspins yet but I did pick up some 1/2oz 4/0 smeltinators on amazon haul to try next year.

I heard they went from a Gama to a VMC. Part of the reason they aren’t at the top of my list anymore.

Flashy swimmer 90% of the time. If I'm using an exposed hook jighead usually an old blade runner spintrix, dirty jigs underspin, or cool baits down under.

Smaller baits like 3.8 and under I use the cool baits and for larger I use a standard jig head with a Z man  spinner that just sticks into the soft bait…. On the larger baits like 4.8 and 5.8 keitechs I super glue the bait to the head so very rarely lose a spinner.

I generally use 3.3 with a 1/0.

These are the hook sizes per Keitech

  • 2.8" - 1/0

  • 3.3" - 1/0

  • 3.8" - 2/0

  • 4.3" - 3/0

  • 4.8" - 3/0 or 4/0

  • 5.8" - 6/0

  • 6.8" - 8/0

  • 7.8" - 10/0 or 12/0

Curious how you think it would pair with a 3in crush city mayor? Is the dropper arm long enough to keep the blade from hitting the belly of the wide bait?

Owner flashy swimmer in different sizes and the Trokar swim blade in 7/0 is what I use. Had to get the Trokar to match some larger soft swimbaits.
